Chapter 36: Reconciliation

Selene’s POV

Lucian turned to face me, his expression cold and piercing. His eyes, usually so warm when they met mine, now searched for an answer I wasn't sure I had. The hurt and betrayal emanating from him were palpable, almost pressing down on me like a physical weight.

“Well, you’re back,” he said, his voice low and cutting. “I didn’t think you would, not after I made it clear how things were going to be.” His gaze bore into mine, daring me to respond. “So what is it this time, Selene? Another stunt to prove you can’t be controlled?”

I swallowed, the sharpness of his words slicing through me. I wanted to snap back and lash out at his presumption, but I bit my tongue. This was not the time for an argument. I needed to make him understand why I was there, and I couldn’t do that if we were just hurling accusations at each other.
