Chapter 25: A Change of Plan

Mason POV

I didn’t expect Nadia to turn me down. When I’d sketched out that Embern dress and laid it on the table in front of her, I thought, for sure, she’d be impressed. I mean, I watched how her eyes widened and her breath caught in her throat when she saw it. She liked it. But then, she had that look, where she tries to act like she doesn’t need anyone’s help, especially mine.

“Thanks, Mason,” she said, her voice a little too cold, a little too sharp. “But I’ve got this handled.”

She didn't even look at me when she said it. Just went back to her black-and-white poster idea, scribbling out notes with her classmates like I wasn’t standing right there offering to make things easier. It wasn’t just about the poster. It was bigger than that. She didn’t ask for help, didn’t even seem to want my help, even though I could practically solve her problem in one move.
