Chapter 48: Sudden ambush.

"How did they come to that conclusion? Also, If there's a prime Devil, as they say, would that mean there's a sort of a family of devils that were primogenitors of demons?"

"You're going to have to go to the capital to get more information on that, as it was years ago when learned all this so some details are forgotten but for the most part that's the prevailing theory amongst historians"

Maria leaned back on her chair and let out a sigh. The woman before her was clearly someone thirsty for knowledge, and the best thing to do for anyone willing to learn is to send them to the place where they'll get the most information on the topic they're interested in.

"That's certainly interesting, now I need to go to the capital, thank you for sharing and thanks for your help"

Reniris responded; however, before Maria could respond, the door to the house opened, and a man walked in; Jake was the first to stop what he was doing and launched himself towards his father.

"I'm back–"

Luke was interrupted as his son collided with his legs clinging to him, like a monkey to its mother.

"Papa, papa, I saw a new Dragon Rider set at the store today. Can you please buy it for me, please!"

The child rapidly fired his demands, giving neither his mothers nor father time to think, already bombarding his father with demands for new toys.

"Now, now Jake. That's not how you greet your father"

Maria scolded as she made her way towards her husband and Luke couldn't help but chuckle at the child's eagerness so he simply gave him a pat on the head ruffling the kid's hair in the process

"I'll see what I can do, my little gremlin. Just you wait"

The kid's eyes lit up in excitement as he gave thanks to him and went back to playing with his toys with renewed excitement.

Maria gave the patriarch of the house a frown, the man knew full well that they were in no position to buy new things, so making such promises to their son was not a good thing.

Arriving before him, she gave him a peck on the cheek and whispered in his eyes.

"Why are you making promises you can't keep, you know we have problems right now"

"Sorry, I just couldn't say no, you know how it is"

He said, scratching the back of his head, and Maria sighed as she figured if he was going to spoil his son to such a degree even when they're not in a good position, she could only wonder how much he would spoil his daughter if she were able to give birth to one.

"Oh thank the Gods, you're back"

Ruth said as she came out of the kitchen, her voice laced with great relief; she arrived before him quickly and gave him a kiss and a long hug.

"Of course I am, you make it seem like I'll just up and disappear"

He said as they separated from the hug but he gave Ruth another kiss on the cheek.

"You know very well that could be a reality, so don't tempt fate"

Maria informed whilst lightly punching his shoulder, prompting her husband to apologise for the tasteless joke.

Reniris watched their interactions silently, with a keen interest. In the past month or so, she hasn't observed how families interact, the best she's seen was just children playing around, so watching Luke's family interact was something interesting as it gave her an idea of what a family looked like

Of course, the interactions between the family only cause more questions to pile up in her head. Was her own family similar to this? Could she experience this with her family in the future?

More and more questions sprung up in her mind, further fueling her desire to know herself and her origins more; she needed to know the answers to these questions.

Feeling her mood slightly shift, she decided it was time to leave, and by the looks of it, with the man of the house present, her presence was being ignored.

"Oh, by the way, this is Reniris"

Maria introduced just as Reniris was standing up from her chair.

"Nice to formally meet you, Mr.??"

"Luke, Luke Johnson, nice to formally meet you Miss Reniris"

The two introduced themselves; both recognized each other, with Luke frowning just slightly once he recognized her.

"Sorry but it seems I have to cut the introduction short, it is getting a bit late, Maria Thank you again for the information, hopefully, I can repay you for it someday"

"It was nothing, so there's no need."

With all that said Reniris exited the Johnson family home and made her way towards the inn, the sun was nearly done setting and the darkness was slowly encompassing the sky

"Overall this was a good day"

She said with a satisfied smile, at least now she knew devils existed and this meant she was one step closer to knowing herself and maybe getting her memories back.

"I can't wait to tell him"

She said, her heart giddy with excitement. It hadn't even been a full day, and she missed him.

Eon exited the guild and leisurely walked towards the inn; the bag of 500ixe was in his hand; interestingly enough, it was actually paper money, meaning he had to get a wallet because, for some reason, the guild just gives you wads of cash in cloth bags.

As he walked, he looked up at the sky and saw the beautiful night sky, with stars sprawled out like multicoloured dots of ink carefully dotted on a black and purple-ish canvas, it was beautiful.

Finding the sprint wolf was quite the task, mostly because the creature was not only fast but sensitive as well, meaning long before he saw it the creature sensed him and ran away and even when he did manage to corner it, its speed was something he didn't expect and because of all that he nearly didn't make it back before the gates closed.

He was lucky that his quest observer waited for him near the gate or the guards wouldn't have let him in.

"He's definitely cool for that"

He said in appreciation of the quest observer, he leisurely walked towards the inn, feeling the cool breeze of the night.

Suddenly, he stopped and stepped back as an arrow whistled past his face; he quickly assumed a fight-ready stance and tried to sense his opponent's location but found it was futile.

"What?!"

He silently exclaimed, and just as he did, another arrow flew through the air, exiting out the alleys and flying towards his back.

He turned and grabbed the arrow only to be forced to duck down, avoiding a sword swing that aimed to cut his head off, just as he was about to retaliate with a fist, his opponent was gone and completely killing his momentum of throwing a fist.

"The fuck?!"

He uttered in confusion and shock.

He couldn't sense the attacker so he didn't know where they were but he could sense an incoming attack meaning‐

*WHAM!*

His thoughts were interrupted as he suffered a blow to his jaw, forcing him to stagger back a few steps, his eyes bulging in shock. The attack didn't particularly hurt, but it was the fact he couldn't sense the incoming attack as he initially thought.

*FWHIP!*

Another arrow flew towards his back; this time, rather than turn and catch it, he simply stepped to the side, dodging the attack. Unfortunately, just as he did, he suffered a direct attack on his stomach.

*BAM!*

The force of the punch sent him sliding back, and this time, he felt pain from it; he groaned and frowned; he definitely didn't like this.
