Chapter 59: Dragon isles

"Well, looks like you failed, if you didn't you would have reported your success as soon as the job was done"

The tall, red-haired woman said as she closed the door behind her. She was a little surprised that Luke was home, but she hid it well. Her brow went up as she saw Reniris; however, she only spared her a glance, but she noted her beautiful face and said.

"And now you're cheating on your wives to relieve your stress, how typical."

Reniris frowned, not pleased by the woman's words.

"I'll have you know I'm no prostitute, so I'll appreciate it if you correct yourself."

"Please, why else would such a beautiful woman who isn't his wife be at his home while his wives aren't home, not to mention it's practically sunset already"

Reniris frowned deeper; this wasn't the first time she had been called a whore or something to that effect; Alexander called her a wench; however, at present, she was upset due to her prior argument with Eon and was not in a mood to be civil.

"I will reiterate, I will have you know I'm no prostitute, so I'll appreciate it if you correct yourself"

She said, this time her voice was firm and more threatening. However, Irma did not correct herself and hummed before responding.

"Tell you what, I'll correct myself if you let me handle my business with Mr. Johnson."

She said, under normal circumstances, Irma would have challenged this woman and tested what would happen if she didn't correct herself; after all, from the way she was speaking, it seemed as if the woman was promising some form of physical conflict.

Reniris, on the other hand, took a glance at Luke and saw the man was doing his best to seem as small as possible and noted the sweat on his forehead.

'Hm she probably works for this Count Paul, so it will be fruitful to hear her talk'

Reniris reasoned.

"Very well, go ahead."

Reniris allowed it but Irma snickered at her, almost telling the woman she didn't need her permission to go about her business.

She didn't expect Luke to be home yet, or rather, she had hoped his wives were the ones at home.

"The Count wants to see you, and discuss the terms of your failure"

"Why did you he send you? One of his low-ranking lackeys would have sufficed"

Luke said, scowling as he focused on her features; he did his best to maintain his calm but deep down, he knew he was fucked, he failed, and now the fate of his family was in the count's hands.

"You don't get to question his whims, you just do what you're told, now come"

"Wait, is it possible for me to come with you? I am interested in completing the bounty"

Reniris expresses. Obviously, that was a lie. However, she wanted to find out a bit more about who these people were and why they wanted Eon dead or rather, why they placed a bounty on him.

"You don't look like a warrior or a mage"

Hearing that response Reniris simply answered by having a bright red magic circle appear above her hand and created an ice crystal before shaping it into a knife and then reverting it into water before letting the water dissipate into water vapour.

Irma scowled, studying the woman's features and body. She seemed to be fairly skilled, at least, and it's always better to have pawns to play with.

"very well"

...

The time of day had been late afternoon when Eon and Luke had been released from the adventurers guild and now the sun had begun setting. Its orange yet golden glow gently reminded everyone that night was approaching.

Eon's mood had been soured, and he found himself unable to shake it off and just forget about it; this was mostly because he felt a deep feeling of dissatisfaction like he had something that he did not finish and that ruined his mood he sought out something that would change his mood.

In his past life he had been an occasional drinker, of course, he drank by himself and never really went to bars or taverns, this was mostly because he had seen the dangers of an inebriated individual amongst a group so he always made the conscious decision to drink alone, it was much more enjoyable than one would think.

Eon was now walking aimlessly, mostly because he didn't know where any taverns were, so he was just walking, hoping to spot some.

Unfortunately, his leisurely walk was suddenly disturbed by someone who started walking beside him, nearly encroaching on his personal space.

"Watch yourself, my dude"

Eon warned as he took a glance and noticed the man's blue hair and lanky build, he also noticed the fact he didn't hear him get close.

"Oh, sorry, I didn't notice you, Nathaniel Aluiscious De Dreyer. I'm a bit clumsy you see"

June stated, with a fake smile on his face, but his sharp eyes looked at Eon with seriousness and vigilance.

"Sorry bruv, don't know who that is"

Eon dismissed, already not in the mood for any type of nonsense right now. He hoped that this guy wasn't some type of bounty hunter or something.

"Don't play dumb Nathaniel, prince of the Dreyer kingdom"

" Big dawg, If you value having your teeth, fuck off!"

Eon nearly shouted, his voice laced with ample venom, as a frown marred his face and his fist tightened; he was in no mood to entertain any games.

"Ahem! I apologise if I offended you. However, the ruling Noble of this city has expressed interest in speaking to you."

June said as he immediately adjusted his attitude and tone of voice, revealing that when you know the identity of someone who's trying to hide, it is usually a good idea to get them to listen and follow your request, but it seemed the man beside him was not that easy.

"I don't give a fuck what some noble wants! Out of my face"

"He has information on the person who placed the bounty on you, Count Paul is just an underling to that person"

June stated and saw the look of interest on Eon's face, and he inwardly smiled, realising he wasn't that difficult after all.

However, before Eon could respond or say anything to what he had been told, something happened.

It Suddenly became dark, darker than night; something immediately covered the entire city in complete darkness, surprising Eon, who leapt back multiple meters away from June and took a fighting stance.

"What is this?!"

He questioned. However, after a few seconds, looking around, he saw multiple people looking up above, with some even letting out sounds of amazement and joy.

"Oh wow, I didn't think I'd see this year."

June exclaimed, wonder and joy present in his voice.

"What is this?"

He asked as he smelt a sudden yet pleasant odour. He couldn't properly describe it, but his best attempts would probably be described as sweet and honey-like but, at the same time, nothing like that. It was confusing, and at the same time, he couldn't tell where it was coming from.

"Don't tell me you've never seen this before?"

He asked as the people of the city began to turn on their torches and lights, properly illuminating the streets, to allow for better visibility.

"No"

Hearing such an answer, June couldn't help but find himself feeling a bit confused; most of the phenomenon currently happening, although it varies on which season it happens, typically happens once every 3 years, so he didn't understand why a prince from the Dreyer Kingdom wouldn't know what it was.

"Those are the Floating Isles of the Dragon Queen sometimes called the home of the Dragons or the Dragon Kingdom or some other fancy title"

He answered; Eon looked up and saw the Floating Islands from underneath; there were gaps between them with some light peeking through, but they were small gaps as the Islands were seemingly pushed together and stayed close.

"Holy shit!!"

"I know right?! According to legend after she betrayed and killed her best friend, she created those Islands as an attempt to reach the high plane and wage war against the gods"

June explained and Eon couldn't help but recall the time Reniris and Reniella spoke about the Dragon Queen, but what they said was similar but slightly different.

"Is there a way to get there?"

"Not that we know. It is protected by a barrier, similar to the one protecting this Kingdom and the Dreyer kingdom; anyway, we were talking about the person who placed the bounty on you."

June explained before returning to the topic and Taking Eon's Attention away from the Islands; however, the pleasant smell still lingered in his nose.

"Right, but do you smell that? It's like honey but not at the same time"

June sniffed the air but smelled nothing that was described, so he shook his head, causing Eon to hum, wondering if only he could smell it.

.....

A/N: I'll be taking a small break, shouldn't be long.
