'"What do you mean I can't? He tried to kill me, He deserves consequences for what he tried to do"
Eon explained, and his brows creased in frustration. He tried to pull his hand off her grip, but Reniris did not let go of his hand, and her grip remained firm.
"Can't you punish him some other way? You heard him he was forced and he did it for his family"
She countered, looking him directly in the eyes. She didn't understand what the issue was. He was alive and well. Could he not simply let Luke off with light punishment? Why does he need to cut off his arm? Does he not get he would be causing nothing but sorrow for Luke's family?
"So what? Because he has a family, he gets to do whatever he wants, don't be absurd Reniris"
"That's not what I am saying, I'm saying he at least deserves a light punishment because he was forced to do something against his will"
Eon tried to pull his hand off her grip once more, but she maintained her firm grip. She looked directly into his eyes with a more stern look this time.
"This is a light punishment. He tried to kill me and failed. He wouldn't be here right now if I tried to kill him"
He reasoned, his anger slowly bubbling up from within the pits of his stomach.
"It's still too much, his family depends on him, you can't just cut off his arm and expect him to be able to work normally after that, come on be a little more forgiving"
"I'm not the one who should have thought of consequences to my actions, and no, I will not be any more forgiving"
He responded, already starting to get tired of the argument, but it looked like Reniris was not willing to back down, so he took a deep breath and exhaled choosing to calm himself before his anger rose any higher before
speaking again.
"Look Ren, if I forgive him, he'll do it again, even if he says he won't, he will do it again because all it takes is someone threatening his family to coerce him, I need to make him think twice about it and I can't do that if he thinks I'll forgive him the next time he fails to kill me"
Eon reasoned calmly. The two had been starting to get loud, so he lowered his voice, this time choosing to de-escalate the situation rather than make it worse.
"I understand that, Eon. I do, but do you really want to ruin a family simply for petty revenge? He has a son that's still young, you can't do that to him"
She said, her eyes softening and her voice quieter and measured. She chose to do the same thing as him, and seeing her expression, Eon let out a deep sigh.
"What about next time when he tries? Am I just supposed to let him go again? Is that what you're going to do when that bozo Alexander comes back to kill you? Are you going to let him go again?"
"We'll deal with the future the best way we can–"
"Jesus Fucking Christ!! This is not the best way! This is the opposite of the best way. If this is how you're going to deal with everything then you aren't dealing with it you're running away"
He spat; this time, he successfully pulled his arm off her grip.
"I'm not running away; I just don't want to rob people of their families; I wouldn't want that; it's not running away. It's…."
"It is running away. Alexander will show up and attempt to kill you again, and you'll let him go, and he'll come back again and try; unless you kill him, he'll never stop, and eventually, he will kill you. Don't be so stupid Reniris and don't let this stupid idea of "family" cloud your judgment"
Eon finished, and Reniris found herself at a loss for words; she tried her best to come up with a response, but she couldn't; her eyes flickered and she wondered about searching for something to give her a response, but she couldn't find any.
"it's… "
She hesitated as she looked down, avoiding eye contact with him; she blinked a few times before continuing to speak.
"It's not stupid. Is it so wrong of me to not want to ruin other people's families? I want to know my family too so I don't want to remember them while also knowing I caused suffering to other families."
She said, her voice was meek and closer to a whisper; she kept her head down and stared at the floor; his words about her idea of family being stupid stung quite a bit and she felt it difficult to look at him.
It also didn't help that this was the first time they'd argued so seriously. She didn't think he would always agree with her, but it felt like he'd always be on her side.
Reniris wanted to remember her family fondly and recall warm memories of love and compassion for her family. Because of that, she didn't want to remember those fond and happy memories while also knowing she caused other families to grieve and be torn apart; she didn't want that on her conscience.
Eon ran his hands through his hair and let out a deep sigh, now he felt bad. He took a glance at Luke, who stood silently there, pretending to be minding his business.
"Look, I'm sorry, your goal is not stupid, I misspoke and you aren't wrong for wanting that"
He said before turning and walking away. She definitely wouldn't want to see him for a bit after this, plus he also needed some space at the moment. He didn't believe he was wrong about wanting retribution, but he chose to let her have her way for the time being, at least for now.
"Where are you going?"
She asked; her voice was barely a whisper; this was a first for both of them, so she wasn't sure if he would come back.
"To get something to drink at a tavern or something"
"Come back, okay?"
"Yeah, don't worry about it"
He said as he exited Luke's home and left a rather awkward atmosphere between Luke and Reniris. The mood became Awkward between the two as they remained silent for a full minute before either of them spoke.
"Uh sorry"
The mage spoke; he felt that he needed to at least apologise, as their spat was partly his fault.
"No, it's fine. He and I will talk about this later, so it's alright"
She answered; although she felt a bit uneasy, she was less sure about their relationship now; at the time of the argument, she didn't think about it, but now she realized that her denying Eon his retribution may have seemed like she didn't care about him.
Sure, he was fine and unharmed, but if he wasn't, would she have been as forgiving? If so, then does she even care about him? If she does care, then should she have let him get his revenge?
'let's think about this later'
She shook her head as she thought.
"You seem close, so I suppose you will"
Luke answered, his gaze focused on the floor, he was feeling a bit ashamed and had trouble looking her directly in the eyes.
"We do? We've been friends for no longer than 2 months, but If we seem close, then that's a good thing, I guess."
Thinking about it now, she supposed it did feel like they've known each other for quite a bit, although she attributed that to the fact they've been a pair everywhere they went ever since they met.
"You're friends?!"
"You sound surprised"
"Well I thought a beautiful lady like yourself and a good-looking young man like him would be a bit more than just friends, but I guess I shouldn't assume"
He explained, and She chuckled softly; she understood what he meant, which made her think about their first meeting, and a faint blush tainted her cheeks.
"Well he's been quite blatant about wanting a relationship but so far he's content with just being friends at least for now"
"I see, but what about you?"
He asked curiously, although he felt like he was prying a bit with that question.
"I don't know yet; I know I like him, and I don't want to see him hurt; he's certainly good-looking, has a nice body and can be cute sometimes, but I don't know."
She said, however, before Luke could say anything, the door suddenly opened, and someone walked in. The individual was so tall so much so that they had to lower their head as they entered.
"Well, looks like you failed, if you didn't you would have reported your success as soon as the job was done"
