Chapter 13: Will Shouting Make It Stop Hurting?

Li Hu was suffering from emotional trauma. Doctors and nurses rushed over, not daring to say much, only offering comfort and urging him to look on the bright side.

"Think about your child."

"Think about your family."

"You are their pillar of strength, how can you fall apart like this?"

Lin Fan raised his hand, smilingly signaling the doctors to stop talking. He gently stroked Li Hu's head. He understood Li Hu's current state. Any further stimulation and he would be knocking on the doors of the mental hospital.

The threshold of a mental hospital is a mysterious and high one.

Some people chase it their whole lives and never reach it.

But others suddenly have a moment of realization, take a step, look back, and find that everything has changed, with no way to return.

Li Hu clung to Lin Fan's leg and cried for a long time. When his tears dried, his heart felt dead.

"Drink some milk, eat some sausage, and go rest," Lin Fan consoled him. Li Hu had truly cried his heart out. Back in Qingshan Psychiatric Hospital, Lin Fan had comforted many people, offering them drinks and food. For them, it was a moment of genuine happiness.

The doctors watched the scene unfold.

Having learned some of the inside story from Li Hu's ward, they felt heartbroken for him. So many storms had not broken this man, but some things could completely shatter even the strongest of men.

"He needs to rest. Thank you for your hard work," Lin Fan said.

A nurse helped Li Hu leave, glancing back at Lin Fan several times. This student in his school uniform was special. His smile was gentle, his eyes clear, but for some reason, he gave off a strange feeling.

She couldn't put her finger on it.

But the feeling was definitely strange.

Suddenly, a nurse noticed Lin Fan's arm and exclaimed, "Doctor, quick, look at his arm!"

The nurse's warning drew the doctor's attention to Lin Fan's arm. Seeing its condition, his face changed dramatically. He hurried forward and gently touched it. "This... this..."

"It's broken," Lin Fan said calmly.

The doctor saw the torn wound on the back of Lin Fan's hand, blood gurgling out, even exposing the white bone.

"Quick, prepare the operating room!"

The nurse rushed out.

"Nurse, no need to rush, take your time," Lin Fan said, seeing the nurse's panic, and trying to calm her down.

"Come with us. Don't worry, your situation is… manageable. It's not too serious," the doctor reassured him. Such a severe injury would normally terrify anyone, but this student was incredibly calm, as if he didn't care about the injury at all. Perhaps the pain had numbed his nerves, but when the nerves recovered, that pain wouldn't be something everyone could bear.

Back in the ward, Lin Fan's classmates gaped, stunned by what they had just witnessed.

Someone whispered, "Is that really Chen Yang?"

"He's become a stranger to us."

Indeed.

Chen Yang had been known as the effeminate boy of Chuangwei High School, with a distinctly feminine way of speaking. But now... they realized that this was a completely different person from the Chen Yang they once knew.

In the operating room, Lin Fan lay on the operating table, quietly looking at the familiar surgical lamp above. It was still as dazzling as ever, even though it wasn't in the same place, the feeling was still the same.

"Doctor, please don't give me anesthesia," Lin Fan requested.

The doctor heard such a request for the first time. "That's impossible. How can we operate without anesthesia? The pain would be unbearable."

"No, you don't understand. I have an iron will. Pain is a form of cultivation. I'm already used to it," Lin Fan explained.

The doctor was about to say something when a nurse tugged at him slightly. The message was clear: if he didn't want anesthesia, then don't give him any. They could tell him they hadn't given him any, but secretly administer it.

By this time, the anesthetist was ready with the needle.

"What's that?" Lin Fan asked.

"It's a solution, good for your injury. Don't worry, it's definitely not anesthesia," the anesthetist said with a smile, choosing a spot above the shoulder and below the head. With a quick, practiced jab, the needle went in. He was clearly an experienced professional.

Lin Fan smiled with satisfaction. "As long as it's not anesthesia, that's fine. Because I don't have any money."

The doctor and nurse were completely baffled by Lin Fan.

They couldn't understand his thinking.

There was a communication gap.

Money?

They hadn't even considered the financial aspect.

Soon, the sound of scissors and the snipping of flesh filled the air. Lin Fan remained expressionless, without the slightest change. He was used to hospitals.

Qingshan Psychiatric Hospital was his home.

And hospitals were his second home.

Lost in thought, Lin Fan closed his eyes and fell fast asleep, soft snores escaping his lips. Falling asleep on the operating table was a rare occurrence.

"Do you think this student is a bit strange?" one nurse asked.

"Yes, definitely strange. Different from other patients we've encountered. And do you know how he saved that patient?"

"How?"

"You might not believe it. According to his classmates, he opened the window, reached out, and grabbed the patient who jumped from the twenty-fifth floor. Imagine the strength required for that! A broken arm is a minor injury; it's a miracle he wasn't pulled down with him."

"And after his arm broke, he didn't even cry out in pain. He just stood there quietly."

Both the doctor setting the bone and the assisting nurses gasped.

Terrifying!

Inhuman.

After some time, the surgery ended.

A nurse wrapped Lin Fan's right arm in plaster. Looking curiously at the student, she couldn't help but ask, "Does it hurt?"

"Yes," Lin Fan replied, a constant smile on his face.

The nurse continued, "It's okay to cry out if it hurts."

"Will shouting make it stop hurting?" Lin Fan asked.

The nurse froze, then after a long silence, replied, "No."

Lin Fan said calmly, "Since shouting won't stop the pain, why shout? Nurse, am I right?"

"Yes."

Lin Fan maintained his smile, gazing at the nurse with clear eyes.

Normally, such a scene would be heartwarming – a silent exchange between nurse and patient.

But gradually, the nurse lowered her head, feeling uneasy. That smiling gaze felt… indescribable. It just felt uncomfortable.

"Could you please not look at me like that? It's making me feel cold," the nurse said, unable to meet that smile and gaze.

"Okay," Lin Fan replied, his smile and gaze unchanged. He continued to look at her. This was his way of conveying friendliness, a habit from Qingshan Psychiatric Hospital.

Everyone smiled like that there, looking at each other with clear eyes.

It would gradually make them forget everything around them.

They continued to gaze at each other,

Exchanging friendliness.

Even if they smiled and looked at each other for a day and a night, they wouldn't feel tired, because their hearts would be warm.
