Chapter 10: The Way Out in the Blue Light

The tremor in the cave finally subsided, and the blue light continued to flicker deep within, radiating an ominous glow. Jack, Sarah, and Tom struggled to climb up from beside the collapsed cave wall. Their bodies were exhausted, and their spirits were on the verge of collapse. Anna remained by the ice pillar, and the mysterious power represented by the blue light and runes seemed to be constantly calling them back.

Jack knew they couldn't abandon Anna, but their current situation left him almost incapable of moving forward. The previous tremor had nearly collapsed the entire cave, with massive ice and rock blocks scattered everywhere, separating them from Anna. The blue light continued to shine in the distance, as if mocking their helplessness.

Sarah looked towards the depths of the cave, her eyes filled with complex emotions. Her voice trembled, "Jack, we can't just leave Anna like this. She... she might still be waiting for us."

Jack took a deep breath; he knew Sarah was right, but he had to face the reality. Their supplies were almost depleted, Tom's mental state was extremely unstable, and although Sarah was strong, she was also exhausted. Going back rashly at this point would only lead to their doom.

"We have to find a way out first," Jack said firmly, a trace of determination in his eyes. "Then we'll figure out how to save Anna. In our current condition, we can't deal with those... things."

Tom sat on the cold ground, his hands tightly wrapped around his knees, his whole body trembling constantly. His eyes were empty, as if the incessant whispers had devoured his soul. He muttered, "They're... they're waiting for us... they won't let us leave..."

Sarah walked over and gently patted Tom's shoulder. "Tom, we won't leave you behind, and we won't leave Anna either. We'll find a way out and leave here together." Her voice was gentle yet firm, though her eyes were also filled with unease and worry.

Jack carefully surveyed his surroundings, searching for any possible exit. The walls were covered with runes glowing faintly blue, making the entire cave feel like the interior of some colossal beast, exuding an eerie atmosphere. Jack raised his flashlight, its beam wandering through the darkness until it finally settled on one side of the cave—there was a narrow crevice that looked like it was just wide enough for them to squeeze through.

"There!" He pointed to the crevice. "Let's head over and see if it leads outside."

Sarah nodded, pulling Tom along. "Come on, Tom, we need to get out of here."

Tom nodded mechanically, stood up shakily, and followed Sarah and Jack toward the crevice. The gap was extremely narrow, and they had to squeeze through sideways. The cold stone scraped against their clothes and skin, and the pain helped to sharpen their focus.

After passing through the crevice, they found themselves in a more spacious area. This cave seemed naturally formed; the surrounding ice walls bore no runes, only reflecting the afterglow of the blue light. It was much quieter here compared to the previous cave, and the whispers had weakened significantly, as if those mysterious beings had temporarily given up their pursuit.

Jack let out a slight sigh of relief. He raised his flashlight, searching for a path forward. Suddenly, his beam landed on a pile of rocks in the distance. There seemed to be something buried among the stones. He walked over and removed a few rocks, finding some supplies—leftover provisions from a previous expedition, including a few cans of food and a bottle of water.

"Is this... our lucky day?" Sarah managed a weak smile, a glimmer of hope appearing in her eyes.

Jack nodded. "At least it will help us hold on a little longer." He distributed the supplies to Sarah and Tom, and the three of them took a brief break, regaining a bit of strength.

"Let's keep looking for an exit," Jack said as he stood up, feeling some strength returning to his body.

They continued along the other side of the cave. Gradually, the surroundings grew narrower, and the air became increasingly stifling. Jack could sense they were delving deeper into the ice, as if descending into an unknown abyss.

As they proceeded, a low rumble suddenly echoed from afar. The sound seemed to come from the depths of the cave, carrying an inexplicable weight. Jack's heart tightened. He turned back to look at Sarah and Tom, seeing the fear etched on their faces.

"What is that sound?" Tom's voice quivered in fear.

Jack shook his head. "I don't know, but it can't be good. We need to move faster and find the exit."

Sarah nodded, and the three of them quickened their pace, moving deeper into the cave. The rumbling grew louder, as if some massive entity was slowly moving towards them.

"Hurry!" Jack urged, and they ran desperately forward, the flashlight's beam shaking across the cave walls, casting frantic shadows.

Suddenly, a light appeared ahead. It was a natural light filtering through a crack in the cave ceiling. Though faint, it was especially brilliant in the dark.

"An exit!" Sarah shouted, her voice filled with excitement and hope.

Jack felt a surge of emotion as he led Sarah and Tom toward the light. The closer they got, the more hopeful they felt, as if they were finally seeing the dawn of survival.

However, just as they were about to reach the exit, the rumbling behind them grew deafening, shaking the entire cave. Jack looked back and saw a blue light surging like a tide from the distant darkness, threatening to engulf them.

"Quick! Get out!" Jack yelled, using all his strength to push Sarah and Tom forward, then following closely behind, running toward the exit.

The three of them practically stumbled out of the cave, collapsing onto the snowy ground. The biting wind hit them in the face, but for the first time, they felt that it was reassuring. Behind them, the blue light gradually receded, and the rumbling slowly faded until it was completely silent.

They had escaped the terrifying cave, but Jack knew this was only temporary safety. The power behind the blue light and runes was far from over. Anna remained in the depths of the cave, and they had no idea how they would face this unknown threat in the future.

"Did we... succeed?" Sarah panted, her eyes filled with exhaustion and confusion.

Jack did not answer; he only gazed out over the endless ice field, his heart filled with complicated emotions. He knew their journey was far from over. There were still more secrets waiting to be uncovered on this frozen land. And those whispers... those ancient beings... were waiting in the darkness for their return.
