THE DEVIL'S PREY
CHAPTER FORTY
Days had passed.
For the first time since Sarah had been brought into this place, the Sin Nation Empire was… quiet. Too quiet. There were no violent outbursts, no punishments being carried out, no sudden chaos in the halls. It was almost unsettling. Like the air was holding its breath, waiting for something to break the silence.
Sarah had tried to use this time to reach out—to find some sense of normalcy in this madness.
She had sought out Valerie more than once, hoping for a chance to talk, to understand her. But every time Sarah approached, Valerie either turned away or walked off without a word. It wasn't anger that made Valerie avoid her, Sarah could tell. It was something else. A wall built up so thick that not even the strongest words could break through.
And then there was Xavier.
He had been avoiding everyone.
