Chapter 1: Golden Great Evolution Technique

New York, USA – York Academy of Technology High School.

This school wasn't particularly famous in this vast supercity that spans 1,214.4 square kilometers. Nor did it boast any notable alumni that everyone knew.

Finney had chosen to attend this school simply because it was the closest to home and had the best facilities among his options.

"Sigh, looks like I only have one year left..."

Finney muttered under his breath, a slight worry crossing his brow as he walked across the soft, green lawn, taking a shortcut toward the school gate.

"Sigh!"

Looking at the constant flow of people at the school entrance, Finney couldn't help but let out another long sigh. In just one more year, this world would undergo changes so unimaginable that it would be beyond what most people could even comprehend.

"I'll say it one last time—I don't want to go out for drinks with you, so please stop bothering me, okay?"

A familiar voice, filled with restrained anger, reached Finney's ears. He turned his head to see a tall, muscular boy with a group of people pestering a beautiful girl not far from the school gate.

The girl had long, light brown hair, delicate features, a high nose bridge, and a pair of amber eyes now brimming with irritation.

Seeing the girl, Finney's expression changed. He quickly walked over, shoved the tall boy aside, and stood protectively in front of her, asking coldly, "Brian, what do you think you're doing?"

Carson Brian, the captain of the school basketball team, had good looks and decent skills on the court. He was quite popular and somewhat of a big deal in school. Although Finney wasn't particularly close to him, he at least recognized him.

"Finney Haleseth?!"

The tall boy staggered slightly before recognizing Finney. With a sly grin, he said, "Hey, Haleseth, this is none of your business, right? I just wanted to get to know the young lady behind you."

"Finney!"

Behind Finney, the girl called out his name in surprise, which made it clear to Carson that the two knew each other.

"She's my sister—now tell me, does this concern me?"

Finney replied icily. Though Carson was both taller and more muscular than him, Finney showed no sign of fear.

"Your sister?!"

Carson froze, clearly not expecting this. His face flushed with slight embarrassment, and his friends, standing nearby, were just as caught off guard. By now, a crowd of students had gathered to watch the commotion.

Faced with Finney's unwavering gaze, Carson instinctively took a step back. However, noticing the puzzled looks from his friends, he quickly regained his bravado, stepping forward again and gruffly saying, "How was I supposed to know she was your sister? Besides, I was just inviting her out for a drink."

"Are you deaf? Didn't you hear her reject you already?"

Finney stared Carson down without a trace of fear. Although he wasn't someone who liked to stir up trouble, he certainly wouldn't stay silent when someone was bullying him or his sister.

"Finney, it's fine, let's just go."

The girl tugged on Finney's sleeve, clearly not wanting to escalate the situation with more people gathering around.

"Watch your step. I have a feeling you're going to trip."

Glancing around at the onlookers, Finney also decided not to make a scene in front of so many people. He gave Carson a sharp look and said in a flat tone before turning to leave, pulling the girl with him.

Behind them, Carson stood there, dumbfounded for a moment, wondering what Finney meant by that cryptic remark. Just as he was about to ask his friends, "What did he mean by…"

Before he could finish his sentence, his left foot tripped over his right, and he fell hard to the ground, cutting his lip. Blood started to flow, and while the injury wasn't serious, it looked absolutely miserable.

The surrounding students gasped in surprise, and a few girls even shrieked. The girl being pulled away by Finney also turned around, hearing the commotion, and saw the whole scene unfold.

Once the two reached the car, the girl in the driver's seat, her large amber eyes filled with curiosity, stared at Finney and asked, "What happened back there? How did he trip?"

"Murphy's Law. Anything that can go wrong will go wrong. If you worry about something happening, it's more likely to happen."

Finney shrugged, offering a deadpan explanation.

"Bullshit!" The girl shot him a skeptical look. "Finney, just because I didn't go to college like you and don't have grades as good as yours doesn't mean I'm dumb enough to fall for that."

"Ugh." Finney clicked his tongue, choosing not to argue. This only made the girl angrier. She grabbed his ear and threatened, "Tell me the truth, or I'm telling Mom and Dad about you drinking!"

"Fine, fine, let go first."

Finney quickly surrendered, muttering under his breath, "You always use that to threaten me. If it weren't for you wanting to drink and dragging me into it, I wouldn't have touched a drop!"

When it came to his sister, Finney truly felt helpless. If he had known things would turn out this way, he would've picked a younger sister instead of an older one.

Carson's fall had nothing to do with Murphy's Law. It was caused by one of the abilities Finney had gained since arriving in this world.

Finney wasn't originally from this world. How he ended up here, he didn't know. He just remembered waking up as a baby, unable to do anything but wail.

Fortunately, when he crossed over, he wasn't completely without resources. He soon discovered he had a system, one that could extract various skills from anime.

The Golden Great Evolution Technique was the first ability Finney drew from the system. It was, without exaggeration, extremely, extremely, extremely powerful. So powerful, in fact, that saying it three times still wouldn't do it justice. The only downside was that Finney couldn't yet fully harness its strength.

"Golden Great Evolution Technique"

"Source: A Certain Magical Index"

"Description: A spell that alters reality according to the user's will."

In essence, it was a reality-warping ability. When Finney first acquired it, the excitement in his heart was beyond words. He spent an entire night wailing in joy, imagining all sorts of wonderful futures. As a result, his parents woke up the next morning with dark circles under their eyes.

But once he calmed down, Finney realized things weren't that simple. No matter how much he willed it, the ability didn't work. He spent an hour trying to will himself to grow up instantly, but not even a hair grew longer. Well, maybe it did, but he didn't notice.

That was when he finally studied the system more closely and discovered that while it provided the skills, using them depended on the individual.

The crash from heaven to earth—that was how Finney felt when he made this realization. It wasn't a complete fall into hell, though, because he knew that while he couldn't use it now, there had to be a way to make it work in the future. The bright future he dreamed of was still possible.

After realizing he couldn't yet use the Golden Great Evolution Technique, Finney set it aside for the time being and started studying the system itself. He had even named it the "Extraction System" based on its functions.

The system's design was simple. Apart from the extraction function, there was an empty experience bar that had been full when he first used it.

Obviously, the next extraction would require the bar to fill up again. Finney tried many methods to refill it, but aside from a slow, natural gain, nothing seemed to work.

That was, until an unexpected event occurred.
