Chapter 15: The Power of Magic

When Finney was strolling around Kamar-Taj with the Ancient One earlier, he had considered whether he could bring Skye along to study magic. He even brought up the question to the Ancient One.

But the Ancient One responded with a question of her own, asking what he thought magic truly was.

Finney didn't have an answer.

The Ancient One explained that almost everyone who came to Kamar-Taj had a story. They had gone through many trials and had their wills tempered through countless challenges.

Magic wasn't just about talent; it required spiritual strength as well. Drawing and channeling the energy of the universe wasn't an easy task.

Moreover, learning magic sometimes required breaking free from conventional knowledge. This was incredibly difficult—before you can convince energy to obey you, you first have to convince yourself.

After hearing this, Finney realized that Skye learning magic might not be that easy.

She had a difficult childhood, but after being adopted by his parents, her life had been filled with happiness. And being a hacker prodigy, she was deeply rooted in the world of technology. In simple terms, Skye was a "tech person." Learning magic would require her to let go of certain scientific beliefs, which would go against her core values.

Magic is a force of "miracles," and miracles often defy the principles of science. While the end results may sometimes align, the philosophies behind them could be at odds.

Even Doctor Strange, who was destined to become a great sorcerer, had to be pushed to the brink of despair with all scientific and medical knowledge failing him before he was able to embrace the mystical and start learning magic.

So, while experience and beliefs may not be everything, they still have a significant impact.

Therefore, Finney believed that bringing Skye to Kamar-Taj now to learn magic might not be very successful. At least, it wasn't the right time. Perhaps in the future, when the world changes—when aliens, mutants, and other extraordinary beings become commonplace—her mindset will mature, and then learning magic might yield better results.

Still, that was just his opinion. The Ancient One hadn't opposed the idea of him bringing Skye along, so it was worth trying to see what would happen.

Entering Skye's room, he found her sitting cross-legged on the bed, her face serious and full of worry. As the only person in the family who knew Finney's secret, her knowledge only increased her anxiety.

"Relax," Finney said, sitting down next to her. "Remember I told you I was going to learn magic? I found the place today."

Skye recalled that he had indeed mentioned this a month ago and even said he would ask if she could learn too.

"Magic really exists in this world?" she asked, still finding it hard to believe. Even after seeing superpowers firsthand, adjusting her understanding of the world was no easy task. This was exactly why Finney thought Skye would have a hard time learning magic at this point.

"Of course," Finney said. "But what I'm learning is called the mystic arts." He thought about it for a moment and made the correction.

"Is there a difference?" Skye asked, confused.

"Maybe it's just what they call it on Earth?" Finney wasn't entirely sure.

"If you're curious, I'll take you to see for yourself tomorrow. If you're interested, you can try learning it too."

Although the chances were slim, if Skye turned out to be a natural prodigy in magic, like Doctor Strange, it would be interesting.

"Really?"

Skye's face lit up with excitement. Who could resist the allure of magic?

"So get some rest. We'll head out tomorrow."

Finney didn't linger on the conversation. It would be better for Skye to experience it herself. That way, it might change her perspective on things more effectively.

However, the next morning at breakfast, Skye showed up with dark circles under her eyes, causing Finney to stifle a laugh.

"I told you to get some rest. What happened?"

"It's your fault!" Skye yawned, shooting him a resentful look. She had been too excited about the prospect of learning magic and had stayed up all night looking up information on the internet. Before she knew it, morning had come.

Fortunately, Finney had already planned to leave in the evening due to the time difference. He had also informed their parents that they would be staying at the shop for the night, so there was nothing to worry about.

The two of them went to the shop first. After urging Skye to take a nap, Finney ran the shop by himself for a while, diligently practicing his skills.

At 7 p.m. New York time, the two of them drove to the front of the Sanctum.

"This is the place?" Skye asked nervously as she touched up her makeup with a small mirror from her bag. After making sure everything was in order, she asked again, "I look okay, right?"

"You're fine, you're fine. Let's go." Finney rolled his eyes and pulled her inside. This time, the lobby wasn't empty. Two young sorcerers were sitting in a corner, sipping tea and reading books.

These two weren't at Kamar-Taj yesterday, so they didn't recognize Finney. They looked at the pair with wary eyes.

"Hello, I'm looking for Master Daniel," Finney said.

"Please wait a moment," one of them replied after a quick nod. He seemed to sense that Finney wasn't there to cause trouble. The young sorcerer went upstairs to find Daniel.

Not long after, Daniel came downstairs. After introducing Skye and exchanging greetings, he opened the portal in the same spot as yesterday.

Skye's eyes widened at the sight, and she swallowed nervously. She gripped Finney's hand tightly, her inner turmoil evident.

"I won't be accompanying you this time," Daniel said. Since he had shown them the way yesterday, he didn't feel the need to escort them again. He waited for the two of them to pass through.

Finney didn't mind. After thanking Daniel again, he led the anxious Skye through the portal into Kamar-Taj.

"Was that magic just now?" Skye asked, her eyes wide as she took in their new surroundings. They had gone from the library to the courtyard in the blink of an eye, and the bright morning sky greeted them.

She had thought that Finney had chosen to come in the evening out of consideration for her lack of sleep, but now, seeing the time difference, she understood the real reason.

"Where are we now?" Skye asked. By now, Kamar-Taj was bustling with people beginning their morning training. Since the Ancient One had introduced Finney yesterday, many of the sorcerers recognized him and greeted him with a nod as they passed.

Finney returned their greetings and answered Skye, "This is Kamar-Taj, the sorcerers' sanctuary in Kathmandu."

"The Himalayas?" Skye asked, recalling what Finney had said the day before.

Finney nodded, and Skye gasped again. "But we were just in New York!"

"That's magic for you," Finney said with a shrug, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. Seeing Skye's incredulous expression, he couldn't help but chuckle. "Alright, enough amazement. Let's go meet my master, the Ancient One."
