Truth or dare

The moment Alicia's question left her lips "When are you two going to get married?" it felt like the air in the room shifted. My heart skipped, and my fork froze halfway to my mouth.

Marriage? Zaya and I hadn't even scratched the surface of that topic. Hell, we'd barely been together for a month.

I glanced at Zaya, silently pleading for her to intervene. She, of course, looked perfectly calm, as if the weight of Alicia's question hadn't just dropped like a bomb in the middle of dinner.

"Alicia," Zaya said smoothly, leaning back in her chair, her voice steady and composed, "isn't it a little soon to be asking that? We're still figuring out what toppings we both like on pizza."

The room broke into laughter, Alicia included, though she gave us a mock-disappointed look. "Fine, fine," she said, waving her hand. "I guess I'll let you off the hook this time. But don't think you can dodge the question forever."
