When you leave Petalburg Woods, there's a flower shop right in front of you. Talk to the person at the door to get the "Bullet Seed" TM.

Bullet Seed is a move with 25 base power but can hit 2 to 5 times randomly.

For someone like him, this is a Grass-type move that can deal up to 125 damage—more than the 120 base power of Solar Beam!

Unfortunately, Chris doesn't have any Grass-type Pokémon at the moment, so this TM will just sit in his bag unused.

Chris regretted not choosing Treecko earlier. If he had, when he faced the Rock-type Gym, Bullet Seed would have made quick work of it!

There are also three berry trees nearby. Chris picked two Cheri Berries, two Oran Berries, and three Pecha Berries.

Inside the flower shop, you can get the Wailmer Pail.

With the Wailmer Pail, you can plant and water berries in the soil where the fruits were harvested.

However, Chris isn't a fan of planting berries.

He found it too much of a hassle—planting a Cheri Berry, waiting a day or two, and getting just 2-5 berries. They sell for only a hundred or two hundred Poké Dollars each.

The profit was too low, and he had to revisit each location to harvest.

In that time, Chris figured he'd rather have his Pokémon collect items from the grass instead.

On the way to Rustboro City, Chris defeated each trainer one by one and eventually encountered a "rich boy" who rewarded him with 1,400 Poké Dollars.

After defeating the rich boy , Froakie finally reached Level 16. Surrounded by white light, it evolved into Frogadier.

[Frogadier (Water)]

[Level: 16]

[Ability: Torrent (effects active when HP is low)]

[Individual Values: HP (31), Attack (31), Special Attack (31), Defense (25), Special Defense (27), Speed (31)]

[Moves: Bubble Beam, Pound, Growl, Quick Attack, Lick, Water Pulse]

[Held item: None]

Chris wasn't thrilled with the name "Frogadier" and jokingly cursed whoever came up with it.

Heading north, Chris crossed the bridge.

At the gate of Rustboro City, he received a Chesto Berry from an elderly woman that can cure the Sleep condition.

There were also three berry trees beside her, and Chris collected their berries as well.

The old woman gave him the Chesto Berry, and two Cheri Berries, two Leppa Berries, and eight Oran Berries.

Chris: Thank you, grandma!

Grandma: You should put that to good use.

Upon entering Rustboro City, Chris searched the area thoroughly. He found many characters to talk to.

In a school, he spoke to a teacher and received the "Quick Claw."

[Quick Claw: When held, it grants a 20% chance for the user to move first in battle if both moves have the same priority.]

In real battles, Pokémon equipped with Quick Claw can sometimes get a speed boost, much like in the games.

Chris gave the Quick Claw to Ralts.

Neither Combusken nor Frogadier needed it since they were already quite fast.

In a nearby house, Chris met a man known as "Uncle Cutter," who gave him the "Cut" HM.

In every Pokémon game, there are certain moves that are essential not just for battles but also for traveling through the world.

For instance, Surf lets you move across water, Fly lets you quickly travel to cities you've visited, and Waterfall allows you to climb waterfalls.

Because of their utility, these moves are often indispensable for trainers.

Cut is one of those essential skills.

After learning Cut, Chris was now able to chop down special trees blocking paths in the game. Just earlier, he had noticed a small tree in front of an item. Now that Froakie had learned Cut, Chris was ready to chop it down.

Chris taught Froakie Cut on the spot, recalling how amazing Ash's Greninja looked when it used Cut—vivid and stylish in every way.

However, Uncle Cutter had warned Chris that after learning the move, the Gym Badge from Rustboro City, the "Stone Badge," would be required to use Cut outside of battle. Without it, Cut could only be used in fights.

That wasn't a problem, though, as Chris was now prepared to challenge the Rustboro Gym.

Before heading to the Gym, Chris made a stop at the nearest Pokémon Center to restore his team's health.

Entering the Rustboro Gym, he encountered three trainers, all students of the Gym, who challenged him to battles. Their Pokémon were much stronger than the ones Chris had faced on the road, with levels reaching as high as 15. This made Chris a bit nervous, but after adjusting his strategy and healing his Pokémon, he was ready to take on Roxanne, the Gym Leader.

As Chris entered the main battle area, he found himself standing at the battle arena. The battlefield was a standard Rock-type setup, with large rocks scattered across the terrain. Roxanne stood opposite him, wearing a blue skirt and red stockings, which seemed like an unusual choice for a Gym Leader—but that didn't matter. The referee was already in position.

"Hello, I'm Roxanne, the Gym Leader of Rustboro Gym," she greeted him. "I became a Gym Leader to apply the knowledge I learned at the Pokémon Trainer School to real battles."

She smiled confidently as she continued, "Since you've challenged me, let's see just how strong you are!"

The referee began announcing the rules of the match: "Trainer Chris is challenging Roxanne, the Gym Leader of Rustboro City. Each trainer can use three Pokémon, and neither side may switch Pokémon during battle. The battle ends when one trainer has no more usable Pokémon."

With that, the Gym battle officially began.

Roxanne was the first to act. She raised her hand, tossed a Poké Ball, and with a burst of silver light, a Geodude appeared on the rocky battlefield.

Chris could only gauge its strength by its level, and when the numbers came into focus, he saw Geodude was at Level 17.

Wait, what?! Level 17 for the first Gym Leader?

Chris was stunned. Hadn't the first Pokémon in this Gym been much lower in level?

If Chris hadn't spent extra time training and leveling up earlier, he would have been in big trouble. At Level 10, his team wouldn't have stood a chance against Roxanne's Geodude—it could have wiped out his entire party!

Seeing Chris hesitate, the referee stepped in. "Challenger, please send out your Pokémon."

Chris took a deep breath and sent out his newly evolved Frogadier, ready to face the challenge head-on.
