Chapter 87: The Tempting Offer

Lysandra's heart raced as the cloaked man stood before them, a mysterious smile playing on his lips. Every instinct screamed for caution, but there was an undeniable allure to his proposition.

"Who are you?" Zephyrion demanded, stepping protectively in front of Lysandra. "What do you want?"

The man chuckled softly, his voice a silky whisper that seemed to weave into the air. "My name is Kael. I'm a seeker of truth, just like you. But unlike you, I have connections that can lead you directly to Elara."

Lysandra narrowed her eyes, scrutinizing Kael's demeanor. "And what do you get out of this?"

"Simple," Kael replied, his gaze unwavering. "I wish to see her fall. Elara has caused enough chaos, and her reign must end. You three might be the key to making that happen."

Zephyrion shifted, his expression unreadable. "You expect us to trust you based on that alone? What if this is a trap?"

Kael sighed, a hint of impatience flickering across his face. "I don't expect you to trust me immediately. But consider this: Elara has eyes everywhere. She'll be expecting you to head south, to Seraphina. If you go there blindly, you're walking into a carefully laid trap. I can guide you to a safer path."

Lysandra felt the weight of the decision pressing on her. Could they afford to dismiss this man's offer? The risk of being caught unprepared by Elara's forces was too great.

"Why not let us find our own way?" she countered, attempting to sound more confident than she felt. "If you're so eager to help, what's stopping you from joining us instead of lurking in the shadows?"

Kael raised an eyebrow, the smirk returning to his lips. "Because I've seen what you're capable of. I won't be a burden. But I can provide you with invaluable information, and I have my own reasons for wanting to see Elara defeated."

After a moment of tense silence, Zephyrion finally spoke. "If we do this, we need to know we can trust you. We can't afford any missteps."

Kael nodded, his expression serious now. "I understand. I can prove my loyalty, but first, we need to move. The longer we linger here, the greater the danger."

"Fine," Lysandra agreed, steeling her resolve. "But if we sense any treachery, we won't hesitate to defend ourselves."

"Good," Kael said, a glimmer of approval in his eyes. "Follow me."

With that, he turned and began to walk deeper into the woods, his movements fluid and silent. Lysandra and Zephyrion exchanged glances but followed closely behind, the boy trailing at their heels.

The forest seemed to close in around them as they traversed the shadows, Kael leading the way with a confident stride. He spoke little, only occasionally glancing back to ensure they were keeping up.

"Where are we going?" the boy asked, breaking the silence.

"To a safe house," Kael replied, his voice calm. "It's a place where we can gather our strength and plan our next move. You'll be safe there."

As they continued, Lysandra couldn't shake the feeling of unease settling in her stomach. The darkened forest whispered around them, and she wondered if they were indeed walking into a trap or if this was the chance they needed to finally confront Elara.

Eventually, they emerged from the trees, revealing a hidden clearing bathed in moonlight. In the center stood an old stone cottage, its windows glowing warmly.

"This is it," Kael announced, gesturing to the building. "Inside, you'll find supplies and a place to rest. We'll need our strength for what lies ahead."

Lysandra stepped forward, her heart pounding as they approached the door. As she reached for the handle, she couldn't shake the feeling that their fates were intertwined in ways they could not yet comprehend.
