Lysandra and Kael pressed forward, their determination outweighing the fear that clung to them. The memory of the shadowy woman lingered in Lysandra's mind, her words repeating over and over. If there was even a hint of truth to what she claimed, then Lysandra's entire understanding of herself—and the war—was built on lies.
Their search for Elara led them deep into the castle, to a section Lysandra had never explored. The walls here were older, the stone worn smooth by centuries. Strange carvings lined the passageway, depicting symbols that seemed to shift and change when Lysandra glanced away. A faint hum of magic pulsed in the air, growing stronger as they neared the end of the corridor, where an imposing iron door awaited.
Kael reached out to push the door open, but it didn't budge. "It's sealed with magic," he said, glancing at Lysandra. "Can you open it?"
She stepped forward, raising her hand to the lock. Her magic flowed freely, intertwining with the ancient enchantment. There was a brief moment of resistance before the door groaned and slowly swung open, revealing a chamber bathed in an eerie blue light.
Inside, the room was filled with shelves lined with ancient texts, strange artifacts, and, in the center, a large crystal pedestal. Resting upon the pedestal was the object they had been searching for—the crystal Elara had used during the ritual. Its surface shimmered, swirling with a dark energy that seemed almost alive.
Lysandra approached the pedestal cautiously, reaching out to touch the crystal when a voice suddenly echoed through the chamber.
"Don't touch that," Elara's voice warned, emerging from the shadows. Her appearance was disheveled, her robes torn, and a weary look haunted her eyes.
"Elara!" Lysandra exclaimed, relief and anger mixing within her. "What is this place? What aren't you telling me?"
Elara's gaze shifted between Lysandra and the crystal, her expression conflicted. "This chamber holds secrets best left forgotten," she said quietly. "The crystal... it's connected to a darker power—one that should have never been awakened."
Lysandra took a step closer to Elara. "And what about the woman who appeared to us?" she demanded. "She claimed to be... a part of me. Is that true?"
A heavy silence followed, and Lysandra could see the pain in Elara's eyes. "There are things you were not meant to know," she said, her voice strained. "When you were born, there was a darkness within you—a curse placed upon our bloodline. To protect you, I separated that darkness from your soul and imprisoned it here. But now, it seems the seal is breaking."
Kael's hand tightened on his sword. "You should have told us," he said sharply. "We deserve to know the truth if we are to fight this battle."
Elara shook her head, her eyes filled with regret. "The truth is a dangerous thing. If you had known, it would have only drawn the darkness closer." Her gaze met Lysandra's, pleading. "You must trust me. We need to reseal the crystal before the darkness fully awakens."
Lysandra felt a mix of betrayal and understanding. The woman they had encountered was a part of her, a forgotten piece of herself that had been cast away. If they did not act quickly, the darkness would not only consume her but everyone she cared about.
Determined, Lysandra stepped toward the crystal. "Then let's finish what you started, Elara," she said, her voice steady. "Together."
