Chapter Sixty-Two: Rigid Rules

Avery’s POV

“Y-you are back.”

I stutter, saying each word with emphasis like a toddler learning words of the alphabet.

“For a second, I don't regret…”

Piper who is lost in her world, stops abruptly, noticing the change in my mood.

My scared mood, coupled with my words, which are not in line with hers, automatically stops.

Slowly following my gaze, she meets Thane standing by the door. Neither of us knew when he walked in.

“Sir…”

It's her turn to stammer, as she gawks at him.

Not saying a word to either of us, he walks past us, heading upstairs, and surely, to his room.

My eyes follow his movements, every flex of his muscles until he is out of sight.

“Do you… Do you think…”

Too shocked to get her words out, she pulls closer, so it becomes more than a whisper.

“Did he hear us?”

She asks instead.

How am I supposed to know that?

We were together when he came, and that I saw him first, doesn't change anything.

“Maybe… Maybe not.”
