But Esmerelda doesn’t care about that. She meets a boy named Elijah in night school. He is like moonlight illuminating her dark life, and she enjoys every minute spent with him. 
One day, a new transfer student rushes into night school and strikes students there. Finally, Esmerelda discovers the unknown side of her classmates: elegant and gentle but also cruel, fierce, and bloodthirsty.
That includes Elijah.
What should Esmerelda do? Return back to a normal but peaceful life, or stay in the dark with Elijah? It is the most difficult choice Esmerelda has ever made.

I felt terror pull through me. My first thought was that everything I had done and Rosalind getting in trouble for letting me out had all been for nothing.


Dave had expected that I would try to run away rather than allow the school to harbor me and have him bring the authorities down on them and the headmaster. It was almost like he knew exactly what I would have done.


“You planned this,” I breathed, the realization hitting me like a ton of bricks.


Dave was mean, a drunkard, and abusive, but he was not that stupid. Even he knew that a school headmaster wouldn’t hand over an underage teenage girl to the man who physically hit her. But he also knew that I wouldn’t have stayed and let that play out.


His whole act in the headmaster’s office had been just that, an act. It was a ploy to get me to leave so that I would be easier to grab. And I had fallen right for it.


Dave smiled wider, all yellow teeth on display, and I felt a chill go through me head to toe.
