I watched as a muscle flexed in his face. It looked like watching marble move. Nothing I said to him before this had caused any kind of reaction. I knew that I had guessed right. But an uneasy feeling settled in my stomach at the thought.
He had said he wanted Esmerelda away from the night school, but I already figured that wasn’t what he truly wanted, not judging by the way he watched her empty seat. Now he was having a full-body reaction—well, for him anyway—at the thought of her leaving the school entirely.
