Awakening

"Hey!! What's your problem?" Tails angrily shouted as he pushed the figure off of him. "Sorry. I was just excited to see you, Mr. Tails!" The figure replied in a voice that Tails recognized. "Cream?! What are you doing here?" "I came to see you. What else would I be doing?" She said as she leaned her head on Tails' shoulder causing his face to turn red with shock and confusion. How the hell did she get here? The camp is off limits to all non military personnel… Suddenly he heard someone walking towards them. Tails turned rapidly but saw nothing out of the ordinary. I should stop taking these walks… He thought to himself as he once more began to wonder how Cream managed to get in…

Fang breathed a sigh of relief as Tails turned back towards Cream. If he had noticed me, I would've been screwed. But, I can now easily complete my task! Fang grinned as he pulled out his signature sniper rifle equipped with a Bluetooth scope, a silencer, and multiple clips. Fang the Sniper was one of the most feared bounty hunters in the world. His speed, strength, stamina, and accuracy were superior to most people. That was because Fang was one of a unique group: the Awakened. Many years ago, mysterious Gates started to appear around the world. At first, people resumed their lives as the authorities thought they were just harmless spatial anomalies until the Monster Break occurred. That day, monsters swarmed out of the Gates killing people and demolishing cities. Everyone thought that it was the end of the world until one day a mysterious hedgehog appeared using powerful abilities to kill the monsters. Afterwards, people around the world began displaying similar mysterious abilities. The government called those people Awakened. While most used their abilities to help people, others like Fang used them for their own benefit. Fang wasn't evil but he was money hungry. He was unrivaled until…"Ugh!!! Why do I keep thinking about that blue rodent all the time?! It gets on my nerves that he always gets in the way! But, I know, this time I'll complete the task without any problems!" He grinned as he pointed the gun at Cream…

"Tails? Are you okay? Your face is all red!" Cream said as she placed her hand on his face worriedly. Tails sheepishly grinned at her. "I'm fine. Don't-" However, Tails stopped mid sentence as he noticed a red laser coming out from a nearby bush…. "CREAM! Look out!" Tails yelled as he pushed her out of the way. A few seconds later, a loud gunshot reverberated across the forest frightening all of the nearby animals who went to hide. Fang emerged from his hiding place with a huge grin on his face. He had done it or so he thought… Just then, he heard a loud rustling sound from nearby. Turning to face it, his smug grin was replaced with a look of surprise as he saw Cream get up from the ground. That's impossible… I heard the bullet piercing her chest…

Cream got up from the leaf pile she had landed in and started wiping the dirt off of her dress. If I hadn't fallen over, that bullet would have hit me. However, as she looked up, her eyes widened in horror. Tails was standing there with a look of relief on his face as he clutched his chest with a glove covered in blood. As he removed his hand, Cream saw a large wound on Tails' chest that she immediately recognized as a bullet hole causing her to realize with shock that she didn't fall over. Tails had pushed her out of the way before Fang fired his weapon taking the bullet meant for her. As Tails fell to the ground, time seemed to slow down as he saw Cream running towards him. "Shit! My cover's been blown! Looks like I have to-" However, Fang was stopped midway through his sentence by a fist slamming into his face which was followed by pure pain. He cried out in pain as he fell down to the ground clutching his now broken nose. As Fang looked up, he saw Cream walking towards him her face red with anger. Cowering in fear, he attempted to run off only to be knocked down by Cream throwing a rock at him. As Fang tried to drag himself away, Cream stomped on his back causing him to cough up blood before picking him up and throwing him towards a nearby tree breaking several of his ribs. She ran towards him with superhuman speed and proceeded to punch Fang with all of her strength. Fang could only yell out in pain as Cream hit him over and over again. By the time she was done, her gloves were covered in blood while Fang was unconscious covered in his own blood. As she glared at Fang, she suddenly remembered something. Tails! He's hurt! She ran back towards his location hoping that he was still alive…

Tails looked up towards the stars as he began to feel lightheaded and drowsy from the blood flowing from his wound. I have no regrets for what I did. I saved her life sacrificing my life for hers. No, I do have one regret. All I ever wanted was to be strong enough to protect my friends but I couldn't achieve it at the end. Tears of regret flowed from his eyes as he felt himself fade away…

Cream dashed as fast as she could towards Tails. However, when she bent down to stop the bleeding, she noticed Tails' eyes closing. "No! Don't close your eyes! Please, Miles…" Tears flowed from her eyes as she looked at Tails' body. "CLAW! HELP!" Cream shouted as he ran towards them with a look of worry on his face. He picked up Tails with one arm and Cream with the other before rushing towards the infirmary.

"Wait, please tell me you're joking!" "I'm sorry but I'm completely serious. At best, Tails has a couple of days left to live." Dr. Quack placed his hand on Cream's shoulder as she began to cry. She couldn't believe it. Tails was one of the kindest people she had ever met. He had a good heart and a love for inventing. She remembered him dragging her to his lab in order to show off his plane the Tornado. She remembered how Tails brought her flowers and the awkward excuse he used when she asked him why he got the flowers. And here she was, unable to do anything, watching Tails die slowly and painfully.

Tails' eyes flickered back and forth as he watched people come into his room to say their goodbyes. He watched as the doctors prepared for his death. I don't want to die. I want another chance, a chance to become the strongest… Tails began to close his eyes for what seemed to be the last time. Just as his body started to shut down, a silent tear rolled down his cheek as the ECG went flat…
