Qrow Pov - Patch.
"Have they started yet?" I asked as I quickly entered the cabin.
"They're about to start! Come quickly, Uncle Qrow," Yang's voice exclaimed from the living room. I hurried over.
" And I, Taylor Hebert! With this oath, on behalf of all competitors, promise that I will outperform all of you losers and place first, thank you very much!" I stumbled slightly as I stared in disbelief at the screen.
"I don't know who she is, but that girl has some guts." I said as I plopped down beside Tai and took my flask out of my pocket. It was just us. Tai and I, along with Yang and her two girlfriends. They had come to keep Yang company despite not knowing Ruby well enough. The last member of their team, Ilia, was still at Beacon. That girl had to confess her feelings to Blake and for the four of them to finally be together, it was ridiculous.
"How unprofessional for a UA student! She was even the student representative!" Weiss exclaimed indignantly. Yang burst out laughing.
"I like it!" Yang exclaimed with a smile.
"That Taylor girl is the one Ruby always talks about, right? Her new 'sister'?" Tai laughed next to me. Yang's expression immediately soured.
"Oh, that one," Yang said with a grimace. Blake rolled her eyes while smiling amusedly.
"I'm sure it refers more to the term, as you would so eloquently say, 'Dick Sisters,'" Blake mocked.
"Blake!!" Yang and Weiss exclaimed at the same time. I just burst out laughing. Tai, next to me, was suppressing a smile.
"What? Your sister was too honest about her activities— "
" LAlalalala, I can't hear you! I don't want to hear anything my sister does!" Yang squealed, covering her ears.
"Don't be childish, Yang. Ruby is a woman in every possible way." Blake chided in a disappointed voice, but the amused glint in her eyes made it obvious she was still saying it to annoy Yang.
"For the love of… let's just watch the festival! It's about to start!" Yang moaned. Blake laughed lightly but looked back at the screen.
"Raven couldn't make it in the end?" I asked in Tai's direction. Tai shook his head with a sad smile.
"Last-minute emergency. She's terribly upset, but there's nothing we can do." Tai said sadly. I sighed but nodded and looked at the screen once more. As Yang had said, the first event was about to begin—an obstacle course.
The race had barely begun, and a student froze half the competitors, effectively stopping them. I whistled in amazement. But that wasn't enough to stop the more experienced competitors, especially Ruby and her fiancé. They quickly took the lead.
"Come on Ruby! You can do it!" Yang shouted happily as she looked at the screen. The excitement started to set in, and I smiled slightly before the first obstacle appeared.
"Those are giant robots?!" Weiss exclaimed in disbelief.
"What?! Why don't we have that at Beacon!? It's so amazing!! " Yang exclaimed as if it wasn't fair.
"Well, we fought that Atlas paladin robot once," Blake pointed out, not taking her eyes off the screen.
"That thing looks 10 times bigger than that Atlasian robot!" Yang complained as she pointed at the screen. Weiss seemed genuinely offended by the slight to something her family had done. She seemed about to speak when the screen showed Miyamura kicking a piece of the robot in Ruby's direction, interrupting her. "Boo! That's cheating!" Yang booed.
"Anything is allowed. It's a completely valid strategy," Blake replied at her side with a smile.
"Whose side are you on?" Yang moaned, and Blake just shrugged. We continued watching the screen, which showed Miyamura being arrested and pinned down by several people. "That's it! That's how it's done! Take that!" Yang exclaimed gleefully.
"They must hate him." I whistled in awe.
"Or he's dangerous," Tai said from beside me. I nodded. If even a fraction of what Ruby told us was true, that was the most likely reason. It wasn't that we didn't trust Ruby, but she had a... particular talent for exaggerating the most mundane situations. I looked at the screen just in time to see Taylor put her fingers in a V shape over her mouth and stick out her tongue. My eyes widened. That girl had the balls to pull that off on an international level.
"Haha! I love it!" Yang exclaimed, genuinely impressed.
"How indecent," Weiss muttered, mortified at her side.
"She's still your sister's 'dick sister'," Blake added amusedly. Yang groaned.
"Can you stop telling me that!" Yang complained before sighing and looking at the screen once more. The second obstacle arrived quickly. Stone pillars and enormous boulders, along with large pits and a large drop down, connected only by ropes.
To no one's surprise, Ruby was competing for first place alongside two contestants who were using wing quirks to fly over the obstacle. The image changed again to show Izumi breaking free from his prison and speeding over the second obstacle while cutting the ropes to stop the other contestants.
Ruby and the other two finally reached the final obstacle: the minefield. To their surprise, as they were racing head-to-head, a powerful wave of wind hit the ground in front of them and caused a massive explosion, triggering the mines beneath them. Ruby was thrown into the air.
" Nooo !! Get up Ruby!" Yang yelled in frustration. Izumi quickly took the lead in the race once again, but this time, he was competing against seven other people, including Ruby, who had recovered and gotten back into the race.
"They formed an alliance against the boy?" Weiss asked in surprise as she watched the entire group at the front attack Izumi as if they wanted to stop him immediately. Izumi had a savage smile as he dodged and stopped all the attacks coming his way while continuing to run ahead of everyone.
The only problem was that he didn't have enough support on the ground due to the constant attacks, so he couldn't overtake the other competitors. At least not until he reached the hallway. To my surprise, Izumi leaped up to the ceiling, turned around, and used the ceiling as a platform to accelerate, securing his victory. Clever.
" Aagghh, no fair! It was so close!" Yang moaned as she slumped back in her seat in defeat as if she herself had lost.
"Hey, at least she came in second," Tai said with a proud smile as he pointed at the screen. The list of finishers was populating in real time as they crossed the finish line.
[Human Cavalry Battle!]
"Well… that's… unorthodox," Weiss said, confused, I snorted amusedly.
"TEN MILLION POINTS!!!" My eyes opened wide as I whistled in awe.
"I guess Ruby dodged a big, ugly bullet. They're going to hit that kid with everything they've got," I said simply.
"If Ruby doesn't join his team," Tai replied.
"It doesn't seem like it. He's teaming up with other people," Blake pointed at the screen.
"Wait, is that Penny?! She's at UA?!" Weiss exclaimed in surprise.
"Oh? You know her?" Yang asked, surprised.
"A little. I saw her with Winter a couple of times. She's Dr. Polendina's daughter. shes a robot," Weiss explained.
"Is the doctor a robot?" Yang asked, confused. I snorted in amusement.
"No, idiot, Penny! Her quirk turned her completely into a machine. She's completely made of metal." Weiss explained exasperatedly.
"That... sounds horrible and weird," Blake said with a frown.
"Wait, how does that work? Is her brain a computer too, and everything? How did she manage to grow? I mean, do metal pieces appear inside her as she grows or… what?" Tai asked, confused. Weiss stopped before looking at him in confusion as well.
"I… have no idea," Weiss admitted, wrinkling her nose.
"Meh, I've seen weirder quirks." I shrugged, dismissing the doubtful existence. Yang snorted.
"Are you sure you weren't seeing things because of all the alcohol in your veins?" Yang asked mockingly. I laughed lightly.
"You know it." I winked at her as I raised my flask in her direction. Yang snorted, and we quickly looked back at the screen as the students were shown forming groups. There were no close-ups, and you couldn't hear what they were talking about, so whatever strategy they had would remain a secret, even to the public.
"…3…2…1… START!!!!" Finally, after the waiting time, the presenter gave the starting signal.
Just as I thought. All the groups immediately targeted Izumi; the 10 million point band was too tempting for most groups, so they attacked immediately. To my surprise, Izumi didn't even flinch. In fact, for some reason, he grabbed one of his team members and used her as a human shield. My eyes widened.
"He's a monster, using his ally like that?!" Weiss gasped in disbelief.
" Umm … Weiss… I think she's enjoying it." Blake pointed out in disbelief as she looked at the screen.
" mmmhh !! hehehehe, m- more! Use me as a shield all you want Miyamura!!" what the fuck.
"You've got to be kidding me," Yang muttered in disbelief, her eyes wide open.
" Hahahaha! Come with everything you've got! My shield can withstand anything!!" His shield, not his companion, was just an object, and the girl holding it shuddered as if she enjoyed that lack of distinction.
" Someone tell me they have a quirk similar to mine," Yang pleaded. Blake snorted.
"Are you saying you're a masochist, Yang? Something you want to confess?" Blake said with a smile, not missing a beat. Yang glared at her indignantly.
"Of course not! I'm not a bottom!" Yang retorted forcefully. Weiss looked confused.
"Aren't you? But the other night-"
"Weiss!" Yang squealed, blushing. Tai and I laughed as we looked away when Yang glared at us, which had no effect.
"Let's watch the match, Yang. Your secret's safe." Blake consoled with a smile. Yang groaned but reluctantly looked back at the screen. We were watching Izumi's group being mowed down by all the other groups.
But that didn't mean he was losing. In fact, he seemed to be thriving and holding his own quite easily, even if everyone attacked at once, and judging by the grin he still had on his face, he was thoroughly enjoying himself. The kid was crazy; I liked him.
"Wait, is that thing an anti-materiel rifle?! They let them use it at a festival?!" Weiss squealed as Ruby's team was shown, one of the girls who was part of the horse actually had an anti-materiel rifle and fired within 30 meters of her enemy.
"UA is something else," Blake muttered in disbelief as she watched Izumi draw his sword and begin to swing it at a terrifying speed that wasn't captured by the cameras. He intercepted the dozen attacks fired in his direction, including the rifle shot, leaving him entirely unharmed on his horse.
Apparently, they knew he would be completely safe, because as soon as he finished, another opponent was already attacking him with force. The high-speed sword clash was incredible. But Izumi could intercept the two-sword attack with a single one before striking his opponent and pushing him away—quite a feat.
Ruby finally joined the attack, launching off her horse in a flurry of petals as she aimed for the 10 million-point band, though she was easily dodged. A completely messy fight ensued. Half a dozen teams targeted Izumi's alone, with no holds barred.
Even that Penny girl had drawn her weapons, and there were 10 of them. Which was apparently a bad idea, because Izumi stole one and gave him an extra weapon to use, which, of course, he knew how to use extremely well.
"Ruby said he uses three swords, right?" I asked distractedly. Tai hummed in confirmation.
"Yes, according to Ruby, he can only use his ultimate moves with three swords," Tai confirmed, and I nodded.
"Wait, three swords? Where does the third one go?" Weiss asked, confused. Yang smiled widely.
"Where are you thinking, Weissy ?" Yang asked amusedly. Weiss blushed.
"Nowhere!" Weiss replied. Tai laughed next to me.
"From what I understand, in the mouth, like he did just now to cut the wire on Penny's sword." Tai pointed out, and the others nodded.
"Weird, but it works for him," Yang said with a shrug.
"I can't help but think now that he's holding back." Blake said, surprised, pointing out the obvious, which made Yang and Weiss freeze, or maybe not.
My eyes widened as he began infusing his swords with Armament Haki. He is so young, and he knows how to use Haki. What a monster.
We then saw a chain attack by all the participants to push Izumi away from his horse, which was terrifyingly effective. Izumi was almost knocked to the ground, and even the girl with the fire quirk failed to get close.
Until he started bouncing in the damn air.
"Is that his quirk?" Weiss asked in surprise.
"No," Tai said, also surprised. "his quirk has to do with food. It makes it more delicious or something."
"What? So how is he jumping in the air?!" Yang asked in surprise, not knowing what to say to him because she had no idea how he was doing it. But he was definitely doing it, and it was valid because he won the competition by still having his 10 million point band.
Finally, they showed the finalists for the last event.
"What?! Ruby isn't there!" Yang exclaimed in disbelief. Then they showed Taylor stealing all the participants' bands with her insects while they focused on Izumi.
"Smart." I can't help but say.
"Oh, come on, she stole from Ruby! What a sister she is!" Yang replied incredulously. Blake smiled.
" then -"
"Shut up Blake," Yang growled, which only made Blake smile more, but she stayed silent.
" Ooh, Ruby will be participating in the recreational events," Tai said as he bounced in his seat. After a break for the students to eat lunch, they announced the tournament and fights before announcing the recreational events. Ruby immediately teamed up with Izumi even though the latter might not be able to compete.
But judging by Ruby's excited look, he must have given in easily.
The recreational events were terribly ordinary. It was something you'd find at any festival, but we kept watching no matter what. Ruby was participating and enjoying it. That was all we needed to know to enjoy it, too.
Finally, we reached the tournament stage. There wasn't much to mention; some were talented, others had terrifyingly strong Quirks. Like that girl with the ice Quirk capable of creating an iceberg the size of a stadium. However, the one that caused the most shock was Taylor's fight.
"What?! She was holding back too?! How many bugs can she control!? That's a freaking apocalypse!" Yang exclaimed, slightly pale in disbelief. And I couldn't blame her. The sight of hundreds of thousands of bugs was alarming. It wasn't something I wanted to face. Just thinking about it made me shudder.
One match after another. As the matches progressed, they became much more intense. All those who reached the top of the festival were good fighters and very strong. Just as expected from UA as they tried to show off.
Finally, the final fight arrived, Izumi vs Taylor.
"He's handsome." I couldn't help but point out Izumi, his hair tied up and his glasses gone. You could see all the piercings he had in his ears, along with the cocky grin on his face. He looked good!
"My girl is quite a woman for landing that guy!" Tai said excitedly. I rolled my eyes as we stared at the screen once again. A fiancé fight. I wasn't shocked when the announcer introduced them both as S-ranks. At the level they were at, they had that potential.
"Is that sword a Japanese national treasure? Who is Ryuma?" Weiss asked in confusion.
" Who's Ryuma?!" Blake exclaimed, to my surprise, completely outraged and much more excited than ever. I had never seen her get so excited. "Sword God Ryuma is the first national hunter of Japan! One of the first national hunters in the world! It was his sword, Shusui, that cut off Kamish's head! He was the one who blinded and scared away the one-eyed black dragon in Greece!"
"He had a long career and retired a few years ago! No one knows his whereabouts, and no one knows what happened to his sword. The fact that Shusui appeared in her hands is great news! She may be related to Ryuma or his heir! It's incredible news!" Blake said excitedly, looking at the screen with shining eyes.
We all looked at her in surprise. It was the first time we'd seen Blake talk so much and get so excited. Even Yang and Weiss, her girlfriends, seemed surprised by the rant. She must really admire Ryuma. Not that it was a bad thing. Blake was right; Ryuma was terrifyingly strong, and he had admirers worldwide. No one said anything, and we just watched the fight.
They were S-rank. At least that Izumi kid was, He'd definitely stepped into the S-rank realm. Armor Haki and Conqueror's Haki at such an age? A damn anomaly. Being able to fight to that extent while being poisoned and emerge victorious was a testament to his strength.
"I... wow." Yang muttered, completely shocked by the fight. And I can't say I wasn't the same. The fight had been incredible. And the fact that two 18-year-old students demonstrated such skill made it all the more spectacular.
"As expected of an S-rank fight," Tai said, nodding. I nodded.
"Able to use Armament Haki and Conqueror's Haki at that age, impressive," I said simply.
"And Ruby is dating him!" Tai said more excitedly. I chuckled.
"I doubt Ruby decided to date him simply because he was strong," I said amusedly. Tai just smiled.
"That doesn't change the fact that he is. Ruby's in good hands!" Tai said, pleased. I rolled my eyes.
"Would we be able to defeat any of them?" Weiss asked nervously.
"Of course!" Yang exclaimed loudly. Blake frowned as she looked at the screen.
"My apologies," Blake said as she grabbed the TV remote and quickly fiddled with it. She pressed a few buttons and began rewinding the fight to the end. She paused it for a moment and began to fast-forward slowly.
"What are you looking for?" Yang asked, confused. Blake didn't answer, just stared at the screen with narrowed eyes.
"There." I pointed at the screen. "That boy's last attack hurt Japan's National Hunter," Blake said solemnly. My neck whipped around so fast toward the screen that I heard it crack. We all looked at the screen immediately. It was barely a frame, scarcely noticeable, and almost imperceptible. But All Might had a gash on his knuckles that he used to stop Izumi's final attack.
"What the fuck?" Yang said, her eyes wide open, echoing my thoughts. That... was terrifying. While National Hunters weren't invincible, there were some who gave off that impression due to how strong and resilient they were. Alexandria in the United States and All Might in Japan. Their defense levels were through the roof, even among other S-rank Hunters. They were practically invulnerable at this point.
…harming one of them, even something as small as that superficial wound, was a truly terrifying achievement.
I couldn't wait to meet him. Izumi and the rest of the girls Ruby was close with. We continued talking about the tournament for the next few minutes while the third-place match was shown.
Once it was finally over and Yang was talking animatedly with her girlfriends, Tai smiled in her direction and cleared his throat, silencing the three of them.
"By the way, when are you going back to Beacon?" Tai asked with a smile. Yang smiled at him.
"Well, the headmistress gave us permission for the whole day, so we planned to take the last flight back to Beacon," Yang chirped. Tai just smiled and raised an eyebrow.
"So Salem's message telling me that you skipped class without warning or permission was a lie?" Tai asked amusedly. Yang paled slightly. Weiss looked genuinely surprised.
"What?! You said the Headmistress actually permitted us!" Weiss squealed angrily as she glared at Yang, who looked away. "Blake, you said it too!" Weiss's fury turned to the brunette, who also looked away nervously after being caught red-handed. Weiss growled loudly as she glared at both of them.
"By the way, I should tell you that Salem told me that if you don't arrive before your last class, you'll be detained," Tai added. The three of them stopped and paled considerably. Looking at the time, yes, they definitely wouldn't make it on time. My smile grew wider.
"We have to go!" Weiss squealed as she stood up and started running.
"You should have warned us before! See you, Dad! See you later, Uncle Qrow! I love you!" Yang exclaimed as she ran off in Weiss's direction.
"Thank you for the hospitality," Black said with a nervous smile before running off after her two girlfriends. I looked at Tai with a huge grin and extended my fist. Tai laughed lightly and bumped his fist into mine as we heard the girls' screams in the distance.
