The science building had grown eerily quiet. Only the faint sounds of the infected in the distance broke the heavy silence that hung in the air. The barricade Kai, Rina, and Asuka had constructed was holding for now, but everyone knew it was temporary.
Kai stood near the window, his sharp eyes scanning the courtyard below. A few stragglers—students who had managed to escape the initial outbreak—were running across the open space, but they wouldn't make it far. Already, the infected were closing in on them, their grotesque forms stumbling through the wreckage of the school.
He turned away, disinterested. Those who couldn't keep up weren't worth his attention. Survival was a game, and only those smart enough to play it deserved to win.
Rina sat on the floor nearby, her back against the wall, knees drawn up to her chest. She hadn't spoken much since the last encounter with the infected. Kai could see the emotional strain in her eyes, the fear that clung to her every breath. She was starting to crack, and he needed to keep her focused.
"You need to eat something," Kai said, his voice neutral as he tossed her a bottle of water and a protein bar they had scavenged from a vending machine.
Rina blinked, as if the idea of food hadn't even crossed her mind. She took the bottle with trembling hands, but didn't immediately open it. "I… I'm not really hungry."
"You need your strength," Kai replied, his tone firmer now. "We don't know when we'll get more supplies. If you're too weak to move when we need to, you're going to get us all killed."
Rina flinched at his words, but reluctantly opened the bottle and took a few sips. She nibbled on the protein bar, though her appetite seemed nonexistent. Kai watched her closely, calculating his next move. Rina was fragile, emotionally vulnerable, but that also made her easy to control. He had already gained her trust by saving her life, and now he needed to keep her dependent on him.
He leaned against the wall beside her, softening his tone just enough to seem approachable. "I know it's hard," he said quietly. "But you're strong, Rina. Stronger than most people here. If you keep pushing forward, you'll make it through this."
Rina looked up at him, her eyes wide with uncertainty. There was a flicker of something—hope, maybe—behind the fear. "Do you really think so?" she asked, her voice small.
Kai nodded. "I know so. You've survived this long because you're capable. Don't doubt that now."
She gave him a weak smile, and Kai knew he had her back in his grip. It was all about balance. A little fear, a little reassurance. Push and pull. Keep her loyal, keep her dependent.
Across the room, Asuka leaned against a lab table, watching their interaction with narrowed eyes. She hadn't said much since joining the group, but Kai could feel her watching, analyzing. She wasn't like Rina. Asuka was strong-willed, confident, and not easily swayed. Kai would have to approach her differently.
He met her gaze, offering a faint smile. "You should rest, too. We're going to have to move soon."
Asuka raised an eyebrow, crossing her arms. "You don't waste any time, do you?"
Kai shrugged. "We don't have time to waste. The longer we stay here, the more dangerous it gets."
"And you're just assuming everyone's going to follow your plan," Asuka said, her tone sharp.
Kai studied her, recognizing the challenge in her voice. Asuka wasn't going to fall in line just because he told her to. She needed to be convinced—shown that following him was in her best interest.
"I'm not assuming anything," Kai said, his tone calm but firm. "But I haven't seen anyone else come up with a better plan. Have you?"
Asuka stared at him for a long moment before looking away. She knew he was right. No one else had stepped up to take control of the situation, and as much as she hated to admit it, Kai's leadership had kept them alive so far.
"I'll give you that," she muttered, pushing herself off the table and walking toward the barricade. "But I'm not just going to follow blindly. If you screw up, I'll take over."
Kai smirked. He liked her fire. "Fair enough."

Hours passed in tense silence as the group fortified their defenses. Every creak, every distant sound of footsteps, made their hearts race, but Kai's mind remained focused on the bigger picture. The school wasn't safe anymore. They needed to find a better base—somewhere with more supplies, fewer infected, and better defenses.
As the sun began to set, casting long shadows across the room, Kai's thoughts were interrupted by a sudden noise outside the barricade. A loud bang, followed by frantic footsteps. Kai's body tensed, his hand instinctively gripping the metal bat.
"Did you hear that?" Rina whispered, her voice trembling.
Kai held up a hand, signaling for silence. The footsteps grew louder, closer, until finally, a voice rang out.
"Help! Someone, please!"
It was a girl's voice, desperate and panicked.
Asuka moved toward the door, but Kai stopped her with a hand on her arm. "Wait."
"We can't just leave her out there," Asuka hissed, glaring at him.
Kai's mind raced. It could be a trap. Or, the girl could lead the infected straight to their door. He couldn't afford to take any unnecessary risks. But at the same time, if she was alone, she might be useful—another body, another pair of hands to help fight.
"Cover me," Kai said, making his decision. He nodded to Rina. "Stay back."
Rina nodded obediently, holding her bat close to her chest. Asuka reluctantly stepped aside, watching as Kai approached the door. He removed part of the barricade just enough to peer through the gap.
Outside, in the dimly lit hallway, he saw her. A girl, about their age, with disheveled hair and tear-streaked cheeks. She was banging on the walls, her breathing ragged as she glanced around frantically.
Kai opened the door a crack and stepped into the hallway, staying low and quiet.
The girl's eyes snapped to him, filled with hope and desperation. "Please! You have to let me in! They're coming! The monsters!"
Kai's gaze flicked down the hallway, scanning for any signs of movement. The infected weren't in sight yet, but he could hear them. They were close.
"Are you alone?" Kai asked, his voice steady.
"Yes!" she cried. "Please, I've been running for hours. They killed everyone else. I—I can't… please!"
Kai's tactical mind kicked in. The girl was terrified, disoriented. She wasn't a threat, but she could attract the infected. Still, she could also be useful if they needed to gather more resources.
"Fine," he said, his tone clipped. "Get in."
The girl stumbled toward him, her relief evident in the way her shoulders sagged. Kai quickly ushered her inside and closed the door, sealing the barricade behind them. As soon as they were safe, the girl collapsed onto the floor, sobbing.
"Thank you… thank you…"
Rina knelt beside her, offering her water and trying to calm her down. Asuka, however, wasn't so sympathetic.
"Who is she?" Asuka asked, her tone cold.
Kai glanced at the girl. She was small, petite, with long brown hair and wide, terrified eyes. She didn't look like a fighter, but appearances could be deceiving.
"What's your name?" Kai asked.
"Y-Yuki," the girl stammered, wiping her eyes. "Yuki Nakamura. I… I didn't think anyone was left…"
Kai exchanged a look with Asuka. The last thing they needed was someone who would slow them down, but Yuki was desperate. She would likely cling to them for protection, which could make her easy to control.
"We're trying to get out of the school," Kai explained. "If you want to survive, you'll need to stick with us. But that means pulling your weight. Can you fight?"
Yuki shook her head, trembling. "I-I don't know… I've never…"
Kai sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "Then learn. Fast."
Asuka shot him a look but remained silent. Yuki, for her part, nodded quickly, her hands still shaking as she gripped the water bottle Rina had given her.
Rina, meanwhile, was watching Kai closely. He could see the worry in her eyes, the way she looked at Yuki as if she wanted to help but didn't know how. Rina's compassion was both a strength and a weakness, something Kai would need to navigate carefully.
"She'll be fine," Kai said, addressing both Rina and Asuka. "We'll teach her. Right now, survival comes first."
Yuki nodded again, trying to steady her breathing. "Thank you… I'll do whatever I can."
Kai knew she would. Desperation was a powerful motiv
ator.

As the night wore on, the group settled into a tense silence, each of them taking turns keeping watch. Yuki had fallen asleep against the wall, her exhaustion finally catching up with her. Rina sat nearby, her eyes heavy with fatigue but her mind too restless to allow sleep.
Kai remained awake, his mind turning over the next steps. The Military System continued feeding him information—mission objectives, tactical assessments, even recommendations on how to manage the group. But he knew that survival wasn't just about tactics. It was about controlling people, keeping them loyal.
He glanced over at Asuka, who sat across the room, her arms crossed as she kept her eyes on him. She was smart, strong, and definitely not someone he could manipulate the same way he had with Rina. Asuka would need a different approach—one that appealed to her independence, her desire to be in control.
Kai smiled to himself. He had always been good at reading people, at figuring out what made them tick. And in this new world, that skill was going to be his greatest weapon.
But there was still one thing nagging at the back of his mind.
The Military System. Why had it activated for him? What did it mean? And how far could he push it?
One thing was certain—he was just getting started.
