Home Sweet Hell

"I would like to know what you are dreaming of," maggie said as she yanked off my headphones.

I had wished we had somehow gotten to our destination, only to see that we were yet to take off.

"What's with the glare, Ri,? it's not like you have anything good to dream about, besides, i have some good news for you,"

She was right, I didn't have anything good to dream about, she and my parents made sure of that but that did not stop my brow quirking questioningly.

she noticed this and chose to answer, "Well, you may know Michael, our childhood friend," she waited a beat watching m face for a reaction before continuing, i don't know what she saw but she continued anyway, "we are getting married." she said to me with a smile.

She knew who Mikhail was to me, she knew how much I loved him and to hear that he was going to marry her, all the left my face.

when she noticed didn't say a word, she began to taunt me, exposing her evil side, "you are not going to congratulate me?"

Mikhail was the love I could never have, just like the list of things my family made sure was out of my reach.

I was trying so hard to stay in control of my emotions that I did not know when we took off. We were finally in the air and that was when Maggie left me alone but not before whispering in my ears, "I know you love him but you see, he is mine and you deserve nothing."

Until a few weeks ago, Maggie was dating a boy from some rich family and she had even flaunted her ring on her social accounts. Mikhail had just been recently widowed and now they were engaged. it all did not make sense to me but i said nothing. I may be rebellious but even I know when to keep my mouth shut.

The flight was short, thankfully, but long enough for me to gather my thoughts and ready myself to meet my parents after so many years had passed.

"Home, at last!" Maggie exclaimed as she went on the plane. I, on the other hand, went to get my luggage but the air hostess didn't let me, they were all about doing their jobs and serving us well.

I stepped out of the plane and was met with Avery handsome man standing with his hands in his pocket. He had sunglasses on which made it difficult to see his eyes. But those cheekbones, that face, I could recognise it anywhere.

And now I wanted him to remove the glasses, his eyes was what drew him to me.

It was sure he was watching us but he made no move to meet us halfway. Then I wondered, wasn't Maggie his fiancée? Why wasn't he rushing to meet her?

All my questions got answered when Michael's attention was drawn to me. Then he slowly removed his glasses and called out my name with that gruff voice of his. I looked at him and when he saw that he had gotten my attention, he smiled in a way that made me almost forget my good girl manners.

Suddenly I was just the two of us, even Maggie did not exist to me. I watched as he walked up to me still smiling. When he came to where I was standing, my legs glued to the ground and eyes watching his every step. He stood in front of me and spoke. I saw his lips move but I heard nothing. I was so lost until Maggie came by and shouted in my face, "Earth to Rhea!"

I was jolted back to reality and smiling but not forgetting to check my lips for drool. Feeling nothing on my fingertips, I returned his smile and got my hands out to shake but he pulled me closer into his warmth and hugged me to himself. His cologne enveloped me. I wanted to hug him tighter, wrap my arms around him but I had Maggie shooting daggers at me, so I let my hands stay glued to my side, balled up in a fist.

"We have to leave now, Mikhail, our parents must be waiting for the news." Maggie said practically dragging Michael off of me and towards their car and he let her.

I watched as they walked off but nothing made me happy than seeing Mikhail usher Maggie into another car, while he went to his.

Maybe Mikhail wasn't hers, maybe I still had a chance, I thought to myself.

Little did I know what fate had in store for me.

When he had left, I went to my gloomy self and walked to the car. I didn't bother checking out the insides of the car or the scenery as we passed.

I just drifted off to sleep, and as usual I didn't have any nice dreams.

The car coming to a sudden halt was what brought me back to reality, and the voice of the driver.

"We are here, ma'am," the driver said, waking me from the painful memory.

"Home sweet hell" I muttered under my breath before stepping out of the car.
