[Return to world]
Reed was now in a room approximately 5x5x4.
He looked around himself.
'Well then, this is quite a lounge.'
The room had two sofas in the middle, a table in front of both with a piece of paper on top of them. Four refrigerators, one in each corner of the room. The room itself was illuminated with soft sunshine emerging from two windows on opposite sides of the room.
There were thin shelves between the refrigerators, three of them filled with covered dishes and utensils of all shapes and sizes. The last one holding towels, a sink, soap, perfume, etc.
Reed walked over to one of the fridges and opened it, revealing it to be filled with beverages and snacks of every kind. He walked over to the others and took a look inside them as well, revealing even more items that he could consume.
He then walked over to a sofa and sat down, picking up the page in front of him.
As he read what it said, a grin appeared on his face.
He then got up, walked over to one of the covered bowls, and opened it, revealing a soup of some kind.
His grin grew bigger.
Half an hour later, Reed sat on the ground without his armour and weapons, surrounded by multiple half-empty plates and bowls. He took a sip from a glass containing a blue liquid and sighed.
He drained the rest of the glass, got up, and dusted himself, before walking over to the sink and washing his hands and face.
He picked up a towel and dried himself off.
He walked to the other sofa and sat down.
He sat still for a moment, staring at the ceiling, his hand resting on the sofa's back.
"Record." He called out after a minute.
"You called?" As always, Record manifested to his side.
"Can you tell me what my rewards do?"
Well-fed and tired, Reed felt a little lazy.
"Of course sir."
"The 'Function upgrade card' allows you to upgrade one of your system functions by one level."
"The 'Skill upgrade card' allows you to upgrade one of your skills by one level."
"The 'Event reward card' allows you to choose a reward from a set prize pool."
"The 'Item upgrade card' allows you to upgrade an item by a tier, but does not work on tier 9 items."
"The 'Trait upgrade card' allows you to upgrade one of your traits."
Reed remained quiet for a few seconds after Record finished speaking.
"Does it tell me what the function upgrade does?"
"The system will offer you a choice in the upgrades you wish to apply if they exist, but only after you've used the card."
"However, I can give you that information if you so wish."
"Hmm. Go ahead."
"Very well."
"If you choose to upgrade your 'Identify' function, you will be given three choices. 1. Deep scan, 2. Mass scan, 3. Area scan."
"I cannot give more detailed information on them."
"I can guess what they do. Continue."
"If you choose to upgrade your 'Map' function, you will be given three choices. 1. Range extension, 2. Radar, 3. Watchtower."
"If you choose to upgrade your 'Storage' function, you will be given a size upgrade, along with three choices. 1. Portal, 2. Freeze, 3. Life."
"The other functions do not have levels, and if you use your upgrade on them, it will be wasted."
Reed said nothing, he sat in silence and thought about what he had just heard, and which upgrade would be the best.
"Let's look at everything before we make a choice. Record, can you tell me what the prize pool for this event contains?"
"The contents are too large to speak about without you forgetting some of them, please check them yourself."
As Record spoke, a panel appeared in front of him.
[Would you like to use 1x 'Event reward card'?]
"Alright then."
When Reed hit the button, a giant screen appeared, with dozens of available options that Reed could choose from.
Reed looked at the bottom, that said, [Page 1/5], and sighed.
"This is going to take some time."
It took him four hours to finalize his selection.
Reed looked at the rewards that he had chosen and smiled.
His selection was as follows:
[Skill: Item creation]
[Skill: Item strengthening]
[Skill: Environment sense]
[Skill: Celestial vision]
[Item: Tier 6 spacial ring]
[Map Function upgrade: Radar]
There were other, more powerful skills, but they each had their drawbacks, or unusability in some scenarios. Some were just useless until he hit a higher level.
He had questioned Record for every one he had thought about taking, carefully eliminating all that could not be applied effectively in various scenarios.
From the 314 available, these five were what Reed thought were the best for him in the near future.
Item creation would allow him to make whatever he needed, as long as he had the required energy at hand. There was no downside to this.
Item strengthening would give him the ability to make any item more powerful, no need to bind them to him. Giving him access to powerful items whenever he needs them.
Environment sense gave him information on everything within a range that grew with his SPI statistic.
Celestial vision allowed him to see the flow of mana and see through obstacles and illusions. It also gave him the ability to see the 'truth' and 'essence' of things, not that he knew what it meant, but it sounded even better.
Finally, the spacial ring would disguise his storage space, and it also gave him an additional storage of 64 cubic metres, which almost quadrupled his carrying capacity.

The upgrade to the map function had worked exactly as he had wanted it to.
Now his map would display nearby creatures as dots on the map, blue for known friendlies, red for known hostiles, and black for unknown.
This would depend on his cognition, so blues could be enemies, and red could be allies as long as he thought about them that way.
Other than that, it also showed points of interest and possible danger, using the '?' and '!' symbols respectively.
He left the skill, trait, and item upgrade cards to use later.
He tried to test his new capabilities, but the room did not allow them to be used, so he shook his head, and returned to the world.
