A few days later, the team found themselves on a train bound for Austria. The rolling hills of Switzerland gave way to the towering peaks of the Austrian Alps, their jagged, snow-covered slopes imposing and remote. Nathaniel stared out the window, his mind racing with the possibilities that lay ahead.
If Metzger was still conducting experiments, it meant that the dark science of Project Black Sun had never truly died. The thought sent chills down his spine. His father had died trying to stop this madness, and now it was up to Nathaniel to finish what he had started.
As the train slowed to a stop in a small, isolated village nestled in the mountains, Ingrid briefed them on the next steps. "The facility Metzger is rumored to be operating from is hidden deep in the mountains. It was originally a Nazi research station, but it's been repurposed since the war. We'll need to be careful—this area is crawling with sympathizers, and if they get wind of who we are, we won't make it out alive."
Nathaniel nodded, mentally preparing himself for the mission ahead. "We'll go in at night, avoid the main roads, and use the cover of darkness to get close. Once we're inside, we find Metzger and get the information we need. No mistakes."
Tom checked his gear, his face set in a grim expression. "Let's hope Metzger's still there. If not, we're walking into a ghost town full of armed Nazis."
As night fell, they made their way into the mountains, following a narrow, winding path that cut through dense forests and steep cliffs. The cold bit at their skin, and the sound of their footsteps was swallowed by the vast emptiness of the alpine wilderness.
After hours of climbing, Ingrid stopped, holding up a hand to signal silence. In the distance, nestled between two peaks, was a structure—barely visible through the snow and darkness. It looked more like a fortress than a research facility, with high walls and guard towers that loomed over the surrounding landscape.
"There it is," Ingrid whispered. "Metzger's lair."
Nathaniel's heart pounded in his chest. This was it—the place where the secrets of Project Black Sun had been kept alive for decades. If they could get inside, they might finally find the answers that had eluded him for so long.
But getting inside wouldn't be easy.
