A smartphone buzzed momentarily, its dark screen lighting up as a message entered.
"Eve, your phone!" yelled a young lady who sat cross-legged on the bed while pressing her phone.
She was pretty with curly red hair and sharp, narrow slit of eyes.
Like Eve, she also had long pointy ears that announced her as an elf.
"I'm coming!' Eve answered back from the bathroom.
It took a few minutes but she soon came out, wiping her face with a light yellow towel.
"Who is it?" Eve asked her friend, Kate.
Kate looked at her and shrugged, unable to provide any answers to this question since she did not bother to even spare the phone screen a glance, much less check for who the texter was.
Eve sighed and went over to bed, picking up her phone and cleaning parts of her face still as she opened the device.
Kate stole a few glances at Eve after seeing how she went silent as soon as she read the messages that were sent to her.
On one of these glance-stealing occasions, Kate had caught her rolling her eyes and this was barely a second after she opened her phone.
The redhead elf did not need a soothsayer, at this point, to find out who the person behind the buzzing of Eve's phone was.
Eve's reaction to the messages were more than enough to tell her.
"Nate, right?" Kate commented, looking at her friend who nodded her head in acknowledgement and let out a deep, long sigh of disappointment.
Kate shook her head, almost like a disappointed mother but not towards Nathan, maybe slightly towards him anyway.
However, much of Kate's disappointment was aimed at her friend who stood in front of her, wrapped in a grey towel that hung just at her mid thighs.
"You know you should just let Nate go, Eve," Kate said. "It's not fair what you are doing to him. And you have also succeeded in roping me in on your lies."
Eve rolled her eyes again and exhaled frustratedly as she packed her blonde hair into a bun, her gleaming emerald eyes scanning the room for her bonnet.
"You know he called me yesterday, and guess what?"
"What, Kate?" Eve asked without looking at Kate even for one second as she continued to search for her bonnet.
Kate obviously knew that her friend was not interested in the topic of Nathan and was only being courteous.
Regardless, Kate's conscience betrayed her every day and she felt the need to let Eve in one the latest with her boyfriend and how she also felt about her using him the way she did.
"He was drunk, Eve."
Eve looked at her.
Kate seemed to have gotten all of her attention in one fell swoop with just this little piece of information.
However, that was not it.
Eve had only just been surprised but wasted not more than two seconds to brush it off as a fallacy.
"Nate doesn't drink, Kate. Even you know this," Eve pointed out as she laughed hard.
"Seems like he successfully made a fool out of you."
Kate's demeanour changed as soon as Eve made that statement that she was being made a fool of.
She didn't quite like to be ridicule, especially not when she was sure of what she was saying.
Eventually, she put it behind back, making excuses for Eve as it was her usual way of doing things.
"I'm sure of it, Eve. I obviously know when a person is drunk," Kate insisted. "And why would he just call me asking about you if you said you texted him last night that you will be here."
Eve shrugged.
"You know where you were last night, Eve and it wasn't here. What if Nate is on you?"
Eve considered this possibility for a second and shook her head in denial.
"Nate isn't suspicious of me. If anything, I have him wrapped around her fingers and that's why I can't leave him just yet. He might end up doing something terrible to himself, even suicide and geez…! I don't need that sort of guilt on me. I'm still too young for that."
She gestured the magnanimity of her dreams with her arms making an arc.
"I still have a lot to enjoy ahead of me. And by the way…"
Eve paused and raised a finger, flashing her friend a cocky smile while at it.
"Nate wants us to have lunch. Just me and him anyway. That's why he texted."
The emerald-eyed elf walked over to her cupboard and took out a bottle of body lotion and began to gently apply on her body starting with her smooth legs.
"I told you he's head over heels about me. I am the apple of Nathan's eyes."
Kate was irritated just listening to her friend talk and with so much confidence at that, but what could she do?
It was not her relationship but Eve and Nathan's, and as much as she did not agree with Eve, she was not going to interfere.
If Nathan was not willing to save himself, she was not going to be the one to do that for him.
She had her own share of life problems to be bothering about someone else's.
One of such problems that Kate faced was what she was trying to solve with her phone.
She surfed the internet, searching cloth designs that would inspire her in any way for her fashion project that was due soon.
If she could just find that one design then she could be happy and relax, but till then, Kate was stuck with scrolling tens of pictures on her phone.
Eve was soon done applying her body lotion and other cosmetics she had wanted to do before heading back to her phone where she left it.
She picked up and brought up Nathan's contact on it to reply to the message he had sent her.
[Babeee! Yeah, I'm still at Kate's. She says hi tho]
[That's so thoughtful. I will see you by 2pm then]
[Luv u too<3]
Eve clearly abhorred what she sent to her boyfriend but she had to play the part until when she was ready to get rid of him completely.
Little did she know that the boyfriend in question also had the exact plan as she does.
