Chapter 34: The Price of Ambition

The next day, Wen sat at her desk, the memory of her recent conversations with Kai and Mei Ling weighing heavily on her mind. She felt as if she was being pulled in two directions—her ambition and her relationship, each one demanding a piece of her that she wasn't sure she could afford to give.

Her phone vibrated with a message from Mei Ling:

"Meeting in 10. Bring your project notes."

Wen took a deep breath, gathering her notes and mentally preparing herself for what would likely be an intense discussion. She knew Mei Ling's expectations were high, and now, with her supervisor's words of warning still fresh in her mind, she felt the pressure more than ever.

In the conference room, Mei Ling was already seated, her expression impassive as she gestured for Wen to begin. Wen launched into her presentation, outlining her analysis and detailing her recommendations, her voice steady but tinged with a hint of tension.

When she finished, Mei Ling leaned back, her gaze assessing. "You've done well, Wen. But I need you to understand something. In this industry, there are no shortcuts, no allowances for personal distractions. You have the potential to go far, but only if you remain focused."

Wen swallowed, her heart pounding as she tried to keep her composure. She knew what Mei Ling was implying, knew that her dedication was being questioned, perhaps even judged. But she couldn't bring herself to ignore the truth of her supervisor's words. She had come to Shanghai with a singular purpose, and she couldn't afford to lose sight of it.

"I understand, Ms. Mei," she said, her voice steady. "I'll make sure my focus remains on the work."

Mei Ling nodded, a flicker of approval in her gaze. "Good. I hope you mean that. Because in this city, success demands everything. You have to be willing to make sacrifices, even if they're painful."

As Wen left the room, she felt a sense of unease settle over her. She knew Mei Ling was right, that her career required her full attention. But the thought of letting go of Kai, of sacrificing the one person who made her feel seen, filled her with a sadness she couldn't shake.
