"Can't I be concerned for Annie?" Ivy's heart raced under Kate's steady gaze, her palms slick with nervous sweat. "What if she and Sophia can't sleep comfortably and want to come back, but feel awkward about taking your room?"
Kate ignored this litany of excuses and asked again, "You really don't want me to move out?"
Ivy closed her eyes, steeled herself, and blurted out, "I'm afraid to sleep alone. Who will accompany me to the bathroom at night?"
"So I'm just a roommate who escorts you to the bathroom?" Kate replied.
Wiping her sweaty palms on her clothes, Ivy said, "Why are we even discussing this? Weren't we going out to eat?"
"It's you who's blocking my suitcase, not letting me pack," Kate remarked.
Feeling a pang of guilt, Ivy stepped aside slightly but didn't relent. "Isn't it wonderful to have a roommate? I can help you carry things, pack, or do anything else you need."
