The girl ceased kicking Lin Yi's leg and instead leaned against the train window, quietly listening to her MP3 player.
"Arrival at Songshan Station! Passengers disembarking, please prepare. This stop will last fifteen minutes," the train's announcement echoed through the carriage. Lin Yi began to gather his belongings in preparation to alight.
To his surprise, the girl beside him also began to organize her things, evidently intending to disembark at Songshan Station.
As she stood, Lin Yi discreetly assessed her height and estimated it to be around one meter sixty-five.
Once they exited the train, Lin Yi marveled at the opulent architecture of the station. Though he had visited a decade prior, the transformation in Songshan over the years was nothing short of astounding.
"Wait a moment!" a sweet voice called from behind Lin Yi. He halted and instinctively turned around.
It was the girl who had sat beside him on the train, waving her hand as she hurried toward him.
"What is it?" Lin Yi was skeptical that she had taken a sudden fancy to him. Despite his good looks, his attire—earthy yellow trousers and a white tank top—resembled that of a rural worker seeking employment in the city.
"Surely you're not thinking of cashing in that pull tab?" she said with a hint of irritation, clearly upset that he had ignored her earlier warning.
"Oh, is that what you mean?" Lin Yi retrieved the pull tab from his pocket and casually tossed it aside.
"Ah?!" The girl was taken aback, unable to fathom such a reaction.
"You… you threw it away?" she exclaimed, pointing at Lin Yi with wide eyes.
"Yes, I did," Lin Yi nodded. "It was fake to begin with; keeping it serves no purpose."
"You knew it was fake?" The girl stared at him in bewilderment, struggling to comprehend. Why would someone knowingly spend money on a worthless item? He hardly seemed like the type who would indulge in such folly.
"Of course. Even if I didn't, you warned me about it on the train!" Lin Yi replied.
"Then why did you give them the money?" Her frustration mounted; this was truly perplexing behavior.
Lin Yi smiled and removed his backpack from his shoulder, unzipping it and opening it in front of her.
The girl glanced at him in astonishment, then peered into the open backpack, only to be startled by the sight of seven or eight bundles of cash nestled within!
"You have quite a fortune! But just because you're wealthy doesn't mean you should spend recklessly," she remarked, misunderstanding his intentions, believing he was flaunting his wealth.
"This is the money from earlier," Lin Yi clarified.
"What do you mean, the money from earlier?" The girl was perplexed. "Are you saying you got the money back? It shouldn't be more than forty-nine thousand; this looks like seventy or eighty thousand!"
"The bespectacled man had another thirty thousand, which I took along with mine," Lin Yi shrugged casually. This was merely a trifling matter, a simple feat for him.
"Really?" The girl was utterly astonished! It wasn't that Lin Yi was unusual; it was simply that he had outsmarted them all, reclaiming his own money and swindling the bespectacled man in the process!
"What's with that expression? Are you thinking of reporting me for theft? Your sense of justice is quite strong," Lin Yi remarked with a teasing smile at her surprise.
"Of course not." The girl blushed and shook her head.
"Nevertheless, thank you for your help earlier; there aren't many girls like you," Lin Yi said sincerely. "How about I treat you to a meal later?"
"No, thank you…" The girl hesitated, shaking her head. "My family is waiting for me at the exit."
Lin Yi nodded, not pressing the matter further. Pursuing someone often requires a delicate touch; being too eager can be counterproductive. "Then I won't keep you."
Wang Xinyan watched Lin Yi's retreating figure and shook her head, finding him a rather intriguing person. Had her mother not been waiting for her at the exit, she wouldn't have minded spending more time with him.
It wasn't that Wang Xinyan had feelings for Lin Yi; rather, she sensed he was quite different. He carried a substantial amount of cash without a bank account, dressed in a way that was undeniably unfashionable, yet possessed an inexplicable charm.
"Sir, looking for a place to stay? Very affordable…"
Once Lin Yi exited the train station, he was immediately surrounded by a group of hostel touts. His workman-like appearance attracted their attention as they focused on individuals like him.
Wealthy people rarely patronized such modest accommodations; upscale hotels didn't need to solicit business.
Waving his hand, Lin Yi pushed past the throng of hawkers and made his way toward the taxi stand in the plaza, holding a note with an address his employer had given him before he left.
Upon entering a taxi, the driver cheerfully inquired, "Where to, young man?"
"To this address," Lin Yi replied, handing the note to the driver.
This particular driver, familiar with the train station clientele, quickly assessed that Lin Yi was a newcomer, likely in search of work. Sensing an opportunity to exploit him, he eagerly accepted the note. However, upon glancing at the address, the driver's expression shifted to one of disbelief!
The note read: No. 36, Guangming Avenue, Songshan City, Pengzhan Building. The distance from the train station was 11.2 kilometers, via the New Second Ring Bridge.
Not only had Lin Yi meticulously planned the route, but the distance was clearly stated as well. Who could he possibly deceive with such precision? Yet, why would a man in workman's clothes be visiting the Pengzhan Building? It was the largest corporate office in Songshan City; surely, he wouldn't know anyone there.
With a sigh, the driver tossed the note aside and obediently began driving.
Songshan boasted excellent transportation; with the many bridges, Lin Yi felt they reached the destination in no time. He paid the fare of twenty-four yuan and exited the vehicle.
Standing before the towering building, Lin Yi felt slightly dizzy; it seemed taller than the mountains back home! His employer must be quite affluent. Perhaps the old man was right—one task could indeed provide a lifetime of sustenance. He just wondered if jumping from the top would result in injury.
However, back home, when the old man had kicked him off the mountaintop, he hadn't met his demise; instead, he had merely ended up battered and bruised, lying in bed for several days.
Once Lin Yi confirmed the address and the name of the building, he strode confidently into the edifice.
