CHAPTER 113

— CENTRAL, THIS IS FLOYD KENAGAN. Can you hear me? Central, this is Floyd Kenagan, Inspector General of the FBI. I need a call back...

— No one will answer, Kenagan. — Kenan interrupted, in a resigned tone.

All telephone, radio or any type of communication signal had been disabled in the place where they were, or perhaps even in the entire city. They did not know if it was due to some kind of breakdown or if it was intentional, part of the plot...

— Something happened in the system, it is possible that it is part of a plan, I do not believe that this whole cadence of events is accidental... — Floyd Kenagan continued.

— You will see from the rescue that was sent to us. — Kenan added.

— Exactly. We need to evacuate this place once and for all, we may be under a military coup... Those soldiers were not here before, when everything happened. If people were immersed in some effect or mental state because of those sound signals, shouldn't they be...

— This time, do you suppose it was a planned attack? — Kenan asked.

— The President felt a chill of fear. Was he under such an ingenious blow? He knew he had very powerful enemies, but he expected more politicized disputes, never imagining that they could be willing to do something as vile as everything was showing.

— I have a friend who says that everyone is always guilty until proven innocent. — Greg laughed when he saw himself paraphrased.

— I think so — Floyd Kenagan answered him.

— Then, we may be victims of new attacks... — Kenan said fearfully.

— It's imminent, Mr. President.

— We're getting close to the end of the afternoon — Tommy interrupted. — We can wait for nightfall.

— What for? — Floyd asked, still hostile to him.

— So that everything becomes more dangerous?

— Darkness is the best camouflage. — replied the confident young man.

Tommy's theory made sense, but there was still more than an hour before the sun set on the horizon. That much time of waiting could be fatal.

Katherine gathered the courage to say something, although she was still very hesitant:

— Besides, the streets must be emptier by now, many must have already left...

— That's true. — Kenan agreed. — I'm not going to risk counting on another rescue and being exposed to what we witnessed here again. We don't know what's happening, and we don't even have telephone communication.

— A situation in which there are no protocols to follow... — Floyd spoke to himself.

— We need a car, — said Gregory Evans — any place is safer than this.

— It's only safe as long as they don't know where we are — Floyd Kenagan replied.

— Right now, they must think we've escaped from here — said the President — but it's likely they'll send someone to confirm the hypothesis.

— Which means that leaving here is our best option.
