Battling Catastrophy

Dark thunderclouds covered the skies of the entire Earth as bolts of lightning struck the land and the winds wailed loudly; a torrent of rain washing over the singular continent covering the surface of the planet.

All the creatures of the planet; predators and prey alike, were hidden deep within their caves and burrows, hoping to survive the catastrophic storm.

The residents of both realms panicked as a creature of absolute nightmare reared its head and roared once more. The very foundation of the world shook with his pain filled roar.

With a deep bellow, a beam of pure chaos fired from his mouth and tore a country size hole through the heavenly realm killing hundreds of thousands of heavenly residents.

The roar that followed carried a shockwave that reached all his children held enslaved in the various pantheons of the heavenly realm, completely breaking the mind control on them and causing them to go berserk.

The roar also reached all the monsters on the mortal realm as well, causing them to rampage across the land and sea. They all had only one thought constantly replaying in their minds, 'DESTROY!!'.

With their current enhanced strengths, his children wrought chaos in the pantheons, annihilating multitudes of lower gods and deities and even putting up a good fight against the senior gods. Without the luxury of another surprise attack, the gods had no other choice but to fight head on against Typhon and his family.

The cataclysmic war between the two forces blew out of proportion as the gods quickly fell unto the loosing side of the battle. Even with their ability to resurrect their combatants using the divine mana of the heavenly realm, Typhon's strength was still unmatched. He seemed to never grow weary or dreary, fighting like a being with infinite stamina.

It finally took gods of nature like Demeter and Artemis to realize the true source of Typhon's unfathomable and unquenching power. Calling for an emergency meeting, the chief gods met to discuss their next step of action.

They finally had no choice but to make the most difficult decision ever made. They had to sever Typhon's connection to the primordial mana of the Earth. Following a plan suggested by Loki, the Norse god of trickery, the gods first focused their strongest forces in attacking and eliminating all of Typhon's children and the other monsters before refocusing all their strengths into challenging the great beast to buy enough time for the main goal to be achieved.

Furious at the deaths of all his children and most of his servants, Typhon gave a dimensional-crossing roar as a large crimson magic circle appeared above him, expanding until it covered the skies above the entire planet. The corpses of all his children and dead servants suddenly turned into red streams and flew up towards the sky, fusing with the magic circle.

The circle then shrunk into a ball above Typhon, who didn't hesitate and ate it whole. His aura surged as his power multiplied a hundred-fold. His dragonic form grew bigger until his wings brushed through the clouds.

He gave another roar that caused the very continent to shake and the tectonic plates to shift, causing multiple fissures all over the planet. Chaos and pandemonium filled the land as the very land beneath the feet of the mortals shook intensely.

Using their divine weapons, all the chief gods led the charge, striking a big blow against the great beast. An attack he easily tanked of course, but they fulfilled their goal of properly securing Typhon's attention.

All the gods of nature from all the pantheons, led by Demeter initiated the sealing process in the core of the planet.

This was going to be an extremely long process as the seal had to first absorb all the primordial mana currently in the atmosphere and the very earth, before the actual seal could be put in place. The entire process could possibly take weeks, leaving the duty of keeping Typhon's undivided attention to the combating gods.

The process was extremely draining as the gods of nature had to channel divine mana through their very own bodies and souls in order to control the flow of the primordial mana and contain it. Several of the hundred gods of nature had already passed out after a few days and others were coughing up blood as well as bleeding through their noses and eyes.

Typhon after a while of battle, began noticing the considerable drop in his power supply and his rage boiled, although he realized it was too late to do anything about it. The gods on the other hand, really abused their ability to resurrect.

They came at Typhon again and again no matter how many times they were decimated. After a while, they stopped caring about the semi-finite divine mana from their realm that was necessary for the resurrection process.

It took another week before the seal was finally complete. With Typhon's source of power completely cut off, his power started to drop at an alarming rate. He had shrunk in size quite a bit. Noticing this, the gods' vigor was renewed as they gave the final push. Even in his perpetually weakened state, Typhon was still a tough opponent.

The final push lasted days until Typhon finally couldn't muster any more power to fight with. Zeus, taking the opportunity, charged up his ultimate attack with all the power he had. This was the same attack he had used to successfully defeat his father Kronos and take control over Olympus.

Realizing the attack may not be powerful enough, Odin and the other chief gods channeled all the remaining divine mana in their bodies into Zeus to supplement the final attack. With a loud pain-filled grunt, Zeus finished charging and fired the full power ultimate attack at the staggering Beast of Chaos.

"Typhon stared at the unavoidable attack speeding towards him and it felt like time had slowed down. His life flashed before his eyes as he recalled his days with his wife and his children and couldn't help but smile. He then realized that time had indeed slowed down and even the chief gods were none the wiser. A translucent projection of a very beautiful woman appeared and wrapped her arms around him from behind.

"It's been a while mother. Never thought you'd be the last person I saw before I died", Typhon said to her with a smile. "I'm so proud of you, my son", she praised him.

"Was there any other way?" he asked her vaguely. Understanding his question, Gaia tightened her hug and sighed. "Truly, this was not a favorable situation but, this too was destiny. Do not fret, the souls of your family are safe in your father's care. You'll rejoin them soon enough", Gaia whispered to Typhon with a smile and he couldn't help but shed a tear amidst a smile of his own.

"Thank you, mother. I'll be taking my leave then", Typhon responded to her as her figure turned into shiny particles and faded away slowly. Upon her disappearance, time resumed and Zeus' attack finally hit its mark, striking Typhon dead center, completely shattering his body.

The semi-permanently darkened sky suddenly reverted back as the sky cleared revealing the sun for the first time in this war between order and chaos.

The very Earth had been permanently scarred and reshaped as a consequence of the battle, with continents broken apart and slowly drifting away from each other, being separated by the oceans.

The army of the gods gave a loud resounding shout of victory that could be heard all across the world. Both mortals and gods shed tears as the terror was finally gone, but it wasn't over yet. The decision was made and the die was cast.

In order to prevent another chaos creature from being born again, the chief gods of all the pantheons agreed to totally sever the connection between the two realms. Their understanding was that, if they are unable to exert any sort of influence on the mortal world, the cosmos would find no reason to seek out any sort of balance.

They also sought to prevent the finite divine mana remaining in the heavenly realm from leaking into the mortal world.

Though their thinking was quite juvenile in the grand scale of things, their plan was still in the right direction.

With the decision made, they first gathered the remains of Typhon's shattered body and entombed them deep within Mount Etna. After sealing the tomb, all the residents of the heavenly realm promptly returned home and, with a grand spell cast by all the chief gods simultaneously, severed the connection, leaving mankind to fend for themselves.

Over the course of several millennia, the entombed remains started to coagulate and compress in on itself until there was nothing left but a fist-sized red pearl.

A few more millennia passed with the pearl silently waiting, buried beneath the Earth until one fateful day, a crack opened up above it.
