The corridor was a mess of flame and destruction, the air thick with the acrid stench of burnt metal and charred flesh. I stood motionless in the center, the soft crackle of my heat shield the only sound as I watched the red coats regroup at the far end of the hallway.
"Move! Form up!" one of the guards barked, his voice sharp and commanding through the crackling comms. The red coats snapped into formation, their specialized armor gleaming under the flickering emergency lights.
"You think you're tough, huh?" another jeered, leveling his rifle at me. "You're nothing but another freak. A failed experiment."
I didn't respond.
The first volley came without warning. BANG! BANG! BANG! The freezing rounds tore through the air, leaving icy trails in their wake. I didn't flinch. My heat shield flared, shimmering gold as the bullets struck, melting into harmless dribbles of molten metal that sizzled on the ground.
