The guild receptionist sitting at the front desk gave Rion a confused look. "You think?"
"Oh, um, sorry. I want to be an adventurer." Rion clarified.
The receptionist smiled. "If that's the case, we can get you evaluated right now. It'll cost one gold coin."
"A gold, huh? I dunno if I have that..." Rion muttered, digging into his coin pouch. As if the universe had heard him, a lone gold coin peeked out from beneath the bronze.
"Ah!" Rion exclaimed, handing it over.
"Perfect! Now all you have to do is fill out these forms." She handed him a thin stack of papers. "Feel free to sit at any of the tables in the corner to fill them out. Here's a pen."
"Thank you." Rion replied.
"No problem!"
With that, Rion took a seat and began going through the papers. The first few pages were just disclaimers and legal notices, making it clear that no matter what happened to him on a quest, the guild would not be held accountable.
However upon reaching the third page, things started to get interesting.
"Adventurers are split into five ranks, numbered 1 to 5. Every adventurer starts at Class 5, the lowest. The more accomplishments one achieves, the higher their rank becomes."
The document went on to explain that the ranking system wasn't purely based on strength—some people remained Class 5 for years, even if they were stronger than others in the same class. Sometimes a class 5 would be stronger than a class 4 but still be a rank lower simply because they took crap quests. It all varied quite a bit.
As he read further, another detail caught his attention:
"If an adventurer goes too long without submitting work to the guild, their rank may drop. If inactive for an extended period, they may lose their adventurer status altogether. To prevent this, adventurers can formally request a leave, temporary or permanent which the guild approves in most cases."
Eventually, Rion reached the last page and began filling the various questions on the form.
Full Name: Rion Leighn.
(He had never thought about his last name before, but Leighn came to him naturally. He was past questioning these kinds of things.)
Age:
Rion paused, thinking for a moment, until the number 19 sparked in his mind and he jotted it down.
Race:
He tilted his head slightly, running a hand over his face then his ears to see if they were pointed. He checked his hands to make sure they weren't green or covered in scales before hesitantly writing: Human.
Class:
Several options were listed:
Knight
Mage
Rogue
Cleric/Priest
PaladinDruid
Other
Since he had been holding a "wand" from the moment he woke up, he simply circled Mage and moved on.
The form included several other optional questions—height, weight, place of birth, home address for guild perks—but since Rion didn't know any of those things, he skipped straight to the final question:
"Why do you want to be an adventurer?"
Rion stared at the question for a moment before, as if by second nature, writing:
"So I can go on adventures." With that, he made his way back to the receptionist.
"Great!" she said, accepting the papers. "I'll put you in our database."
She set the paper down and looked up at him with a smile. "We'll get your adventurer ID set up in a sec, but from here on out, you're officially an adventurer!"
