At that moment Kenny turned his full attention to Carlos, his posture relaxed but his tone deliberate. "Carlos, you'd better show your new detective here the lay of the land," he said, his hand coming to rest on Carlos's shoulder in a gesture that felt more commanding than friendly.
"We wouldn't want him causing trouble for himself—or for anyone else."
