The city lights blurred past as they drove. Lucas didn't speak much, but Kai could tell they weren't headed to any office.
The streets became darker, rougher.
Kai recognized the shift immediately. They were heading somewhere dangerous.
Finally, Lucas slowed the car and pulled into a narrow alley.
Kai's gaze flickered to the neon-lit signs, the grimy streets, the people lurking in the shadows.
Without being told he could tell this was one of the most notorious places in the city.
Lucas tapped his fingers against the steering wheel before turning to Kai.
"We're looking for information on the latest bank robbery," he said. "I've got leads—but we need proof."
At that moment Kai leaned back slightly, watching Lucas.
Normally, Lucas wouldn't bring a new recruit here. But this wasn't about the case.
Lucas wanted him to see action.
To see if he could handle it or perhaps get him killed.
