At exactly 1pm after the lecture, which should've ended an hour ago, ended, some group of boys advanced towards the back seat.
Upon seeing him, other students naturally stopped what they were doing and glanced towards the back. Leading the group of boys was Zion, who walked with the aid of a clutch.
Dillon, who had seen them walking towards him, paid a blind eye to them as he stuffed his bag with the books he used for jotting down things during the lecture.
The things he always jotted down weren't for him, since he had a pretty good retentive memory. They were for Merlin to study with, since he found it difficult assimilating things in a rush.
Furthermore, Merlin usually sleeps throughout his classes, solely relying on the recording he made of the lecture with his phone and Dillon's note.
Dillon had woken him up as soon as the class ended, and the latter was still stretching his body when he saw Zion and his boys walking towards them.
"Did you get into a scuffle with your roommate?" He asked, glancing at Dillon.
Dillon shrugged. "I didn't."
As soon as he got to where Dillon and Merlin sat, he slammed his crutches threateningly on the floor, trying to frighten the duo.
While Merlin glanced up at him, Dillon didn't even act like he was there.
"Did you hear? The scholarship student attacked his roommate and broke his leg. The disciplinary board is currently reviewing the matter." A girl from the crowd whispered to her friends.
"I hope he gets expelled. Getting into a fight with someone who pays tuition fees and the hostel fees? Does he think he now measures up to Zion because they happen to attend the same school? What a fool." Someone who was behind them, scoffed.
Merlin froze. What happened? Who fought? Why didn't I hear of it?
The previous day's activities exhausted him so much that he slept until a few minutes to 10 this morning. He didn't bother checking the school's site when he woke up, as he prepared himself and rushed to the hall.
Classes got sometimes delayed, so he didn't find it familiar when he saw the class was yet to begin. Instead, he found a seat at the back for him and Dillon and continued his sleep.
The first thing Zion noticed was Dillon's new set of clothes, and he quickly assumed Merlin was the one who got it for him.
"Merlin, if you keep wasting money getting him clothes all the time, he'd think he's on the same level as you. Treating the poor with kindness only gets you humiliated and in trouble. I mean, look at me, for example. I suggested to help him out and tried to admonish him, but instead got beaten up." Zion huffed, referring to his foot, which was in a cast.
Merlin didn't hear the first thing he babbled, but he definitely paid attention to the part Zion said Dillon beat him up.
In terms of wealth, his family was far richer than that of Zion's, so Zion made sure to watch his tone around Merlin. He didn't even know why Merlin was so bent on keeping someone as disgusting as Dillon as a friend.
"So you're trying to say he did that to you?" Merlin questioned, glancing at the cast and then at Zion's face.
"Of course. I have no reason to lie to anyone. Besides, my other two roommates were around when this happened." Zion said, even wincing in pain. He then glanced behind him at Kent and Austin.
Understanding the look, Kent and Austin stepped forward and immediately backed up Zion's words, "We were right there when it happened. Dillon grabbed and slammed Zion's leg on the cupboard simply because he thought Zion was going to hit him because he moved his leg."
"Is that so?" Merlin scoffed, the corners of his lips curling up in disdain.
Zion nodded in satisfaction, thinking the look of disdain was directed at Dillon. Let's see how you're going to survive when Merlin stops being friends with you, you idiot!
"The disciplinary committee is currently in a meeting discussing how to deal with Dillon for beating me up. Even if you involve your father, you won't still get him off the hook." Zion uttered, a hint of warning in his voice.
Involve my father? What nonsense. As if there's anyone who can go against the heir of the Grendel family?
When that thought made its way to Merlin's mind, he realized he was reacting for no reason. The person involved didn't bother defending himself, which meant he had a plan in mind.
Seeing Merlin go silent, Zion smiled triumphantly. Finally, he could do to this prideful bastard as he pleased.
He suddenly raised his crutches to hit Dillon when he heard multiple footsteps behind him.
"Students; Kent Gibbs, Austin Clarke, Zion Edward and Dillon Grendel, the Chancellor asks that the four of you come to the office." This person was no other than the students' president, with his assistant standing beside him.
"Whatever. You're about to be expelled anyway. Maybe if you try to please, I can ask my cousin to find you a cleaner job in his father's company. I overheard Kent telling Austin you were dismissed from your part-time job at the delivery company you worked out. I imagine things must be hard for you now that you have no source of income." Zion said in a haughty voice.
At that moment, Dillon glanced up at him and asked, "What's the name of your cousin's father's company?"
Zion stared at Dillon in disgust upon hearing that. Just like he expected, this dog with no upbringing and connections would always jump at every opportunity to make money.
"Bayer Corporation. It's one of the big companies here in New York. Ranks 697th in the world despite having just one branch, which is the one here in New York. I'm telling you, security and cleaners make three times the amount lecturers here make in a month!"
When the other students heard him, they gasped. That was a really fat paycheck for a mere cleaner.
"Just imagine how rich you'd be once you've worked there for ten years and even managed to get promoted to being one of the staff. That'd be a lot for someone who won't have a university degree!" Zion continued.
Kent and Austin couldn't help but have a firm resolve in their heart they had made the right choice by being close to Zion. Compared to Zion, their families were small fries. If Zion's father could put in a few good words for them to the higher-ups in the future, they wouldn't have to worry about anything!
From today, they'd stick even closer to Zion.
"That's really gracious of you, Zion." Austin said proudly, happy that people knew him as Zion's friend and roommate. Then he turned to Dillon and his expression turned to that of disgust.
"A few words of apology aren't enough for what Zion has promised you. You should do something worthwhile. How about going down on your knees and telling him how grateful you are for such an opportunity? Be fast with it. The Chancellor doesn't have all day." He humphed.
"Zion Edward, your father is waiting for you in the Chancellor's office, and he says to tell you he doesn't have the whole day." Someone said behind them again.
Zion glanced back and recognized the girl to be the assistant students' president. "Sure."
"You heard her, we can't afford to waste any more time with you." Kent butted in with a vicious gaze.
He proceeded towards Dillon to force him to his knees. He was rest assured none of the students would rat them out.
However, just before he got to Dillon, he heard Zion's voice, "Father, I was about to leave with the students' president. I apologize for keeping you and the school's Chancellor waiting."
A boy being surrounded by a group of boys who weren't his friends hinted at only one thing–he was being bullied by them. Yet, Jethro and Richard pretended not to understand what was going on.
"Since everyone is gathered here, It's better to give this announcement here." Richard said, glancing at the faces of the students.
"Earlier today, something happened in the boy's hostels. Dillon Grendel assaulted Zion Edward and ended up breaking the foot of the school's rising footballer."
"The disciplinary committee was informed and after careful consideration, they came to the conclusion Dillon Grendel's presence in this school is extremely dangerous to the well-being of other students as it seems he's unable to control his anger around his fellow students. On that account, he is hereby expelled from Yale University!" Richard concluded, causing the students to glance back at Dillon.
Despite the fact he had been proclaimed expelled, there was no trace of panic in his eyes.
Richard cleared his throat and added, "The student is expected to be out of the school's premises before night falls."
He was about to walk out of the classroom when Dillon's calm voice stopped him, "Am I being expelled because I'm a poor student on scholarship who has no one backing him or because you found evidence that I really did attack Zion Edward?"
"Playing the pity card won't excuse what you did to me. Leave the school before the Chancellor has you dragged out by the security!" Zion scoffed, the corners of his lips curling up in mockery.
Dillon didn't glance at him as he had his eyes pinned on Richard. Richard asked, "If you think their judgment against you is unfair, go ahead and write a petition. The school will take it into consideration and look into it further."
Dillon dipped his hand into his pocket and took out his phone, he tapped a few things on it and a recording came up.
"Hey, you seem a lot more rude now. Didn't they teach you manners at the orphanage you came from?"
"You son-of-a-bitch!"
"How could you move out of the way? Do you have any idea how valuable his foot costs!"
"What do you mean? He's the one who tried to hit me. How is it my fault he missed and instead broke a bone as a result of hitting my wardrobe."
"Let's see who the school believes!"
Jethro's heart palpitated when he heard the unmistakable voice of his son. The recording that Dillon played was self-explanatory and it was obvious Dillon had nothing to do with what happened to Zion's foot.
Furthermore, Zion's first words hinted at bullying.
Zion's hands shook. This brat. How and when did he record their discussion? Why didn't he say anything in the first place?
"How could you falsify a recording?!" Zion yelled, streaks of blood appearing in his eyes.
"Yes, Dillon, how could you falsify a recording? Is this your way of getting back at us because you've been expelled for something bad that you did? How childish and degrading?" Kent hissed, glaring at Dillon. But if one took a closer look, they'd notice his hands were shaking in fear.
"Falsify?" Dillon tsked, fiddling with his phone, "We can meet the IT department to see if I falsified it."
Jethro, who was adamant on maintaining his place as an assemblyman, quickly stepped forward. Falsified or not, if that recording got out, it'd ruin the good reputation he had tried to build for the past two centuries.
"Dillon, getting expelled from Yale University isn't the end of the world. Once you're out, I'll make sure to take you to another good university and sponsor you until you're done with school, provided you hand over the recording to me." Jethro negotiated in a calm voice.
A long silence ensued in the hall, as Dillon had lowered his eyes at some point as he continued fiddling with his phone.
"Expelled. Negotiate. Sponsorship. They're all gibberish to me." He chuckled slightly.
Since it has come to this, there was no longer any need to keep hiding who he really was.
