Chapter 28: Bold and Defiant

The dealer's hands rested fully on the table, displaying no signs of unusual behaviour. Just as I was engulfed in confusion, an unexpected movement caught my eye. The second finger of the dealer's left hand slightly curled inward.

This gesture was subtle and concealed. Even if noticed, it would merely appear as a commonplace action. Yet, the balding man suddenly produced another chip worth ten thousand and confidently placed it in the betting area.

"Double down!"

In blackjack, doubling down means betting on one additional card after an initial wager. For instance, if you have two cards totalling ten points, you might believe that your next card will be high; thus, you can choose to double your bet, wagering an amount equal to your previous stake. Once you double down, you are allowed only one more card, irrespective of its value.

The dealer dealt the cards, and the balding man drew an eight, bringing his total to twenty, while the dealer held eighteen. He had won once more.
