Chapter 4: Visions of the Past

The transition was so sudden that Aurelia gasped, her breath catching in her throat. She was no longer in the Keeper’s shop, no longer surrounded by the scent of incense and the flickering candlelight. Instead, she stood in a sun-drenched field, the sky a brilliant blue overhead. The air smelled of wildflowers and fresh grass, and in the distance, she could hear the soft chirping of birds.

For a moment, she was disoriented. How had she come to be here? Where was the Keeper? Where was the Shadow Market? She turned in a slow circle, trying to get her bearings.

And then she saw them.

A woman and a girl, walking hand in hand through the field, their laughter echoing in the air. The woman’s face was familiar, heartbreakingly so—Aurelia’s mother. And the girl… the girl was herself, years younger, before life in Lysandra had stolen the innocence from her eyes.

Aurelia watched, frozen, as the memory unfolded before her. She had been no more than six years old, a carefree child with no knowledge of the darkness that would soon enter her life. Her mother, a gentle woman with a kind smile, had taken her to the countryside for a picnic, away from the noise and chaos of the city.

“Come on, Aurelia!” her mother called, her voice filled with warmth. “You’re going to miss the best part!”

Aurelia’s younger self giggled and raced after her mother, her small legs carrying her as fast as they could. The sun shone brightly, and for a moment, everything was perfect.

But Aurelia knew what was coming.

This was the last memory she had of her mother before she was taken. Before the sickness. Before the cruel hands of fate tore her family apart.

She tried to move, tried to reach out to them, to warn them, but her body wouldn’t respond. She was merely an observer, forced to watch as the scene played out exactly as she remembered it. Her mother’s laughter, so full of life, echoed in her ears, and her heart ached with the knowledge that this moment would soon be lost forever.

“I can’t change this,” Aurelia whispered to herself, her voice trembling. “I can’t stop what’s coming.”

The sky began to darken, the vibrant colors of the field fading to gray. The vision blurred, and the figures of her mother and younger self dissolved into mist, leaving Aurelia standing alone in the void.
