The aftershocks persisted even after the storm had gone. Andrew's stress reappeared just after Amelia had gotten used to living with Sophia at home. Something had changed in him ever since he had received Marcus's note. His actions were stiffer, his silences longer than normal, his defensive instincts harsher.
Andrew would let her know when he was ready, so Amelia knew better than to press. However, she was unable to ignore the impending danger since she was holding a baby.
After setting Sophia down late that evening, Amelia saw Andrew in his office. The only source of illumination was his computer screen, which created shadows on his face. He was scrolling through emails with his jaw clenched and his fingers tapping the desk.
"What was Marcus saying?" she enquired as she entered.
Andrew didn't raise his head. "He's attempting to negotiate."
Amelia felt a knot in her gut. "A bargain?"
