Chapter 420: Life or Death Unknown
Marine Headquarters —
"What did you just say?! Garp launched a simultaneous assault on both the Rockefeller Pirates and the Big Mom Pirates?!"
Marshal Kong's voice rang out in shock, disbelief written all over his face.
"Yes, sir! Vice Admiral Garp is currently under joint siege from Rockefeller Charlotte and Charlotte Linlin. His situation is extremely perilous!"
The messenger relayed the report through Den Den Mushi. Kuzan (Aokiji) confirmed the information.
"Damn it!!"
Kong's enraged voice shook the headquarters, his fury so intense it burst through the office roof.
Everyone in Marine HQ turned toward the source in alarm.
"What did I say back then?! No direct conflicts! And now Garp's involved in the thick of it?!"
"Marshal, now is not the time to assign blame," Kuzan said urgently. "Vice Admiral Garp is in danger. Charlotte and Linlin have joined forces—he's barely holding on!"
"Get Garp out of there now! I'll dispatch Sengoku to assist immediately!"
Kong slammed the line down and called for Sengoku.
Upon hearing the news—
"That damn fool!"
Sengoku threw on his justice cloak and stormed toward the port.
"Set course for the New World! Full speed!"
—---
"Vice Admiral Garp! Orders from the Marshal: retreat immediately!" Kuzan yelled through a loudspeaker, not daring to get too close.
But it was already too late.
Garp was locked in a brutal battle with both Charlotte and Big Mom. Even if he heard the order, he couldn't respond.
"Trying to run? Not happening."
Charlotte blocked Garp's escape, slashing down with his blade.
Clang!
The sword struck Garp's back with a metallic ring. His coat shredded, revealing dark bronze skin—his Armament Haki barely holding.
The slash cut deep into his back.
"Guh…"
Garp groaned, the pain almost knocking him from the sky.
"Garp, die!"
Big Mom roared, cleaving down with her massive blade.
Clang!
Garp's Haki-covered arm blocked it, but the force knocked him back dozens of meters.
"Where do you think you're going?!"
Charlotte surged forward again.
Another slash.
Garp dodged and countered with a punch, shattering the sword aura.
He wasn't backing down. His target had always been Charlotte.
Boom!
His fist collided with Charlotte's blade, sending him sliding back through the air.
Both men flashed through the sky in rapid exchange.
Big Mom blinked.
…Was she third-wheeling this fight?
She jumped in again.
"Ma-ma-ma-ma! Garp, die already!"
Three days and three nights passed.
Charlotte and Linlin grew more and more excited, while Garp approached his limit. His body was soaked in blood from head to toe—wounds from blades and fists covering every inch.
He glared at Charlotte.
Charlotte, despite his excitement, had taken more damage than Linlin. Garp had clearly focused his fury on him.
"Garp, today is your end!"
Charlotte shouted, unleashing a slash.
Boom!
It tore open Garp's chest—flesh and blood flying.
The old man swayed, eyes dimming.
Charlotte grinned.
"The Hero of the Marines—finished by me!"
He raised his sword high, Haki swirling.
"Demon Sword—Overlord Slash!"
Berserk Conqueror's Haki crackled. Charlotte swung.
Garp crossed his arms to block—
BOOM!
The impact engulfed him.
He plummeted into the ocean.
Charlotte froze, eyes wide.
Without hesitation, he dove in after him.
Underwater, he saw Garp's battered form swimming away, blood trailing.
"GARP!!"
He broke the surface and surged forward.
A slash split the sea, catching Garp again.
Spurt!
Fresh blood. Yet Garp's willpower drove his body onward.
Charlotte watched as Garp fled across the ocean and disappeared from sight.
Charlotte's fury exploded.
His gaze snapped toward the Marine battleship.
Kuzan stiffened.
A massive sword beam shot toward him.
Kuzan raised wave after wave of ice walls.
Crash! Crash! Crash!
Ten walls shattered before the slash dissipated.
Using the moment, Kuzan ordered retreat.
Charlotte, unable to vent his rage, turned toward Big Mom.
They locked eyes in mid-air.
But Charlotte turned away and returned to the Poseidon.
"We're leaving!"
He barked.
The battle had ended—messy, chaotic.
Garp's intervention had shattered Charlotte's plans.
He was now in far worse condition than Big Mom.
Continuing the fight would only favor her.
Big Mom watched the Rockefeller Pirates sail away without attacking.
She was shaken.
Charlotte had grown powerful.
Ten years ago, he was beneath her.
Now?
Now even she had to take him seriously.
No wonder Kaido had died.
Riding her thundercloud Zeus, she returned to the Queen Mama Chanter.
"Mom!"
Her battered children greeted her with worry.
She ignored them.
"Return to Whole Cake Island."
With that, she turned and entered the cabin.
No care for their wounds.
Both factions retreated.
The sea quieted.
Only the ruined island bore witness to what had occurred.
—---
Kuzan fled the battlefield, trying to track Garp's trajectory.
Suddenly—
"Kuzan!"
He looked up.
A small craft rocketed over.
Sengoku had arrived.
Alone.
He'd taken a great risk entering the New World solo—countless pirates would pay to claim his head.
"Where's Garp?!"
Kuzan hesitated, his voice low.
"Vice Admiral Garp… is missing."
Sengoku froze.
"…What?!"
"He was struck down by Charlotte and fell into the sea. We don't know where he drifted."
