To my great reluctance, I had allowed myself to be loaded onto a boat and pushed out to sea. We quickly discovered that the currents were strong and they towed us farther and farther out.
"Mommy?" Clay tugged on my sleeve, "Where are we going?"
"I'm not sure," I replied quietly.
Selen tugged on my leg. I looked down at her and she gave me a radiant smile.
"There's stuff downstairs for us," She had a glow of excitement about her. She plunged into the darkness before I could even chide her to not play on ladders.
I smiled back and towed Clay with me. As we descended the ladder the thick smell of fresh wood filled our noses.
Clay sneezed, and let go of the ladder for an instant.
I dropped to the floor and caught him in my arms.
"That's why we don't play on ladders," I teased him.
It was dark down here, I blinked trying to adapt my eyes to it.
