Chapter 71

Spirits were distinct from demons and existed everywhere in the world. Even in the midst of a fiercely blazing fire, in rough waves, in the wind over the fields, and in dark caves, they could be found. Spirits were inherently selfish, which led most people to dislike them. There were also those who outright detested their presence.

In ancient times, spirits and demons were often regarded as the same, but such misconceptions faded with time. This differentiation allowed scholars and historians to measure the extent of spirits' deeds—both good and bad. However, this did not mean that spirits were inherently evil. On the contrary, they were closer in nature to pure humans.
