The Flesh Curse

The others leaned in closer, startled by the tone.

“There was an overseer working here who turned into a Maenok.”

The group gasped in shock.

“I thought only Outsiders could become Maenoks. Is there another reason for it?”

The question was directed at the senior overseer, who had been working in the mine the longest.

He knew of the overseer who had become a Maenok.

“Alright then... Let me tell you as a warning.”

It had happened during his time.

“Do you know why the holy knights insist on burning even the intact corpses of Outsiders?”

Deaths were common in the mines, especially among Outsiders.

Every body had to be burned.

“Isn’t it because they could turn into Maenoks? We don’t know much about the temple’s ways, so we just do as they tell us to do.”

“....”

The senior overseer hesitated.

Even recalling the incident gave him chills.

Though he worked in the mines, supervising criminals and Outsiders, he wasn’t mad enough to do “that.”
