Out of Reach

Calix waded through the water, moving closer to the rock where Heesoo was sitting. Propping his arm on the stone and resting his chin on it, he watched her intently.

She held the phone to her ear, tapped it with her palm, then—of all things—started holding it up in the air, waving it around.

Afraid she’d topple off the rock, Calix quickly pushed himself out of the water and climbed up onto the rock.

“Heesoo!”

Water dripped down from his body, splattering onto the ground.

He was barefoot and naked, but he felt no shame standing in front of her anymore.

“What is that thing? You won’t even answer when I call you.”

He stepped closer, but Heesoo remained completely fixated on the phone.

When he finally got a good look at the screen, he saw colorful images moving inside it.

It was strange—fascinating, even. He could almost understand why Carlos had gone to such lengths to collect these things.

But Calix didn’t care for foreign artifacts.
