KARLIAH POV
"Are you sure that you're feeling alright, dear? You've been awfully silent, and this isn't like you," Mrs. Baker muttered coolly.
I gave her an assuring smile.
"Yeah, I'm fine; it's just that things have been tense at home," I replied in a quirky tone, leaving out the part where my aunt almost stabbed me with a knife.
She placed a comforting hand on my shoulder.
"Karliah, you know that you can always come to me if you have any problems. We might not be family, but I care about you."
I hugged her tightly.
"Thank you, Mrs. Baker."
She patted me on the back.
"Now tell me what's bothering you."
I sighed deeply.
"Life kinda sucks right now because I lost my brother, and now my best friend is gone."
"Are you talking about that young man you used to hang out with?"
"Yes, that's him; his name is Matt."
She sighed softly as she pulled out a chair.
"Come on, sit down."
I nodded quietly and sat beside her.
