Chapter 48

KARLIAH POV

When Lisa was out of sight, Jodi and Mark approached me, looking concerned.

"Karliah, are you okay?" Jodi asked in a soft voice, and I quickly wiped my tears away, forcing a smile despite the pain I felt inside.

"Yeah, I'm fine. Don't worry about it. That's just typical Lisa; she's always mad about something."

"Are you sure?" Mark asked.

I nodded quietly.

"Yes, I'm fine for the hundredth time. Guys, please don't worry about me."

"Okay, I guess I should finish my project; it's due today. Mr. Paul will be here to check on our progress."

"Yeah, me too," Mark finally said as he glanced at his wristwatch.

Once they were both gone, I went back to my office, slumped in my chair with a sigh as tears blurred my vision.

Yes, the pain was definitely still there. She had struck a nerve by calling me a homeless loser. The door opened, and Anita stared at me with wide eyes.
