Damian swallowed hard, nodding slowly as he ran a hand through his disheveled hair. The words brought him relief, but also a new kind of torment. She was safe, but still so far away from him. His fingers brushed over her knuckles, his touch tender, almost reverent.

She was out of danger. His baby was safe. The words repeated in his mind like a mantra, but the fear that had settled deep within his chest refused to dissipate completely.
