Chapter 66

Chapter 66

Leila knocked rapidly at the Palace Gates, her heartbeat slightly erratic from the urgency of the situation. She knew Damian had allowed her to visit Tanin, but something inside her warned that the atmosphere at the palace was different tonight.

The heavy iron gates creaked open slightly, revealing a maid peeking out. Without wasting a second, Leila tried to push her way in, but before she could take another step, two palace guards immediately blocked her path.

"Hold it," one of them barked.

Leila scowled. "What are you doing? You know who I am!"

The guards didn't budge. Instead, they moved closer, their expressions stern as they started patting her down, checking her arms, pockets, and even her boots.

"Seriously?!" she exclaimed, pulling away from their touch. "I'm Tanin's assistant, for Goddess' sake! I don't have any weapons on me!"
