The ball's clamor seemed to fade into a low hum as Lady Seraphine's words hung in the air.

"I was just telling everyone how much I'm looking forward to the announcement of our betrothal," she said, her voice sweet but firm, calculated to draw every ear in the vicinity.

Eleanor held her breath, her pulse pounding as she watched Prince Adrian's face. His expression was unreadable, a mask of royal composure. For a brief moment, his eyes flicked toward Eleanor, and she thought she saw the slightest flicker of discomfort.

"Lady Seraphine," Adrian said finally, his voice measured, polite but distant. "I appreciate your enthusiasm, though I believe such matters are best left to be addressed in due time."

The crowd's murmurs swirled around them like a storm. Lady Seraphine's smile faltered, though she recovered quickly, her expression cooling. "Of course, Your Highness. I understand."
