Ch 78: There is nothing we can do - Part 2

"I just can't believe he would leave Maric," Linus said aloud, more to himself than anyone else.

"Maybe he had a good reason," Rui offered from behind him, her tone light but with an undercurrent of something Linus couldn't quite place.

"What kind of reason would justify leaving a child alone?" Linus snapped, his frustration bubbling to the surface. He immediately regretted his tone and glanced at Maric, who looked down at the ground, as though upset by the outburst.

"Sorry," Linus said softly, patting Maric's shoulder. "I didn't mean to scare you."

Maric nodded without looking up, his small form trembling slightly. Rui, walking a step behind, exchanged a glance with Fenrir, her lips curving in a faint, knowing smirk.

Linus's doubts began to spiral further. Had he made a mistake in bringing these strangers into the fold? Fenrir's demeanor, Rui's subtle manipulation, and even Maric's vulnerability—it all seemed to fit together too conveniently.
