The snowfall grew heavier, its relentless descent wrapping the village in a hushed, white stillness.

Each flake kissed Cheska's cheeks, melting against the warmth of her skin as she cradled the trembling child in her arms. Kier's weight was light, but the burden he carried felt immeasurable.

Behind her, Kalis hovered, her green eyes sharp with both concern and wariness. The maid's posture was tense, her arms were holding on to Cheska's shoulder as she studied the boy.

"Do you know this child, my lady?" Kalis asked, her tone cautious and edged with suspicion.

"Yes," Cheska replied, her voice firm but gentle as she adjusted her hold on Kier. She didn't look up. "He's the younger brother of a bard I met recently."

"Then why is he out here alone?" Kalis pressed, her suspicion growing.
