75. Ruined Throne

The tunnels stretched beneath the city like the veins of a long-dead beast. Their walls were carved from worn-out stone, cracked and webbed with the roots of some of those strange vines. Pools of stagnant water dotted the uneven ground, reflecting the flames Eiko kept on all through.

Faded carvings lined the passageways, testifying to the tunnels' once popular use. Loose debris crunched underfoot, and the occasional gust of cold air hinted at unseen passages deeper within the ruins.

The farther those men led us, the quieter the world above became. Still, the ambient Solarin shot up, reaching levels I did not expect that city to contain. My skin tingled as a result of that abundance, and Eiko's flames burned brighter.

That phenomenon felt suspicious, especially when those men did not seem alerted by it.

There were several possibilities that would birth that occurrence, but none of them made sense within the ruined city.
